American Heart Month: The American Heart Association urges people to "Get in on the Action!" in February by making physical activity part of their daily lives. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of health problems which can contribute to heart disease and stroke.

Activities as simple as walking, yard work, housework and dancing, done for at least 30 minutes a day, provide long-term health benefits. Aerobic activities such as brisk walking, bicycling, swimming, jogging and jumping rope, done three or four times a week for 30 to 60 minutes, help the heart, lungs and circulation.

The AHA says cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer in the United States today.

The Central YMCA will have fitness assessments from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 8; and Barbara Steffens has a "Learn How to Walk the Talk" workshop from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 8. Assessments will also be taken at Windward Mall on Feb. 8, with blood pressure screenings and exercise demonstrations; at Pearlridge Mall, at a date to be announced; and at Kahala Mall 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 22 and 23, with exercise and cooking demonstrations and a walking workshop with Steffens.

Assessments will be offered in East Hawaii on Saturday at Safeway, Feb. 8 at KTA-Puainako, Feb. 15 at Sure Save in Kinaoole and Keaau, and Feb. 22 at Sack 'n Save-Puainako. The Club in Kona offers a free one-week workout to those who take the self-test, available 8 to 11 a.m. Feb. 3 and 18, and 2 to 5 p.m. Feb. 4 and 17.

Maui residents can take assessments and blood pressure screenings Feb. 3-7 at J. Walter Cameron Center and Kaahumanu Mall, Feb. 10-14 at the YMCA and Feb. 10-18 at the Maui Memorial Hospital's Health Fair.

Kauai will have a Health and Harmony Day, with more than 100 exhibitors in preventive care, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 15, Kukui Grove Center.

Activities in Molokai will be in late February.

In addition, AHA will launch its national educational campaign HeartScore '97 on "CBS This Morning" Feb. 3-7. AHA-Hawaii offices are in Honolulu, Kihei, Wailuku, Kona and Hilo.

Heart Month series: Dr. Russell Fujioka speaks on "Women, Menopause & Hormone Replacement," noon Saturday, Straub Mililani Family Health Center. Reserve at 625-6444. Free lectures and screenings continue at the center in February.

Drs. James Navin, Geroge McPheeters and Jeff Killeen talk about pap smears and detecting breast cancer, Feb. 4. Also 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18.

Dr. Steven Orimoto discusses monitoring cholesterol intake, noon Feb. 8.

Dr. Andrew Dang speaks on "Staying Alive," noon Feb. 15. He discusses screenings for hypertension and various cancers as preventive measures for longer life.
