
Dr. John N. Warner went almost everywhere in the name of tropical and subtropical agriculture.Warner, a geneticist, worked in nearly 80 countries.
Warner, 77, formerly of Honolulu, died Dec. 12 in Monterey, Calif.
He became head of the departments of genetics and pathology at the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association.
Warner traveled extensively for a U.S. Department of Agriculture-sponsored project for a world collection of sugar cane germ plasm.
In 1966, he became vice president and director of agricultural services for Hawaiian Agronomics Inc., overseeing projects in Guatemala, Colombia, Ecuador, Indonesia, the Solomon Islands and Iran.
Wagner led field studies in Venezuela, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina, the Ivory Coast, Senegal and Afghanistan and provided consulting services to Chinas Sugar Industry Research Institute.
In semi-retirement from 1984-88, he consulted for development banks, foreign government agencies and private clients.
From 1988 to 1990, he was director of the Sugar Industry Research Institute in Jamaica.
