The Manoa post office has been closed indefinitely, according to a posted sign. I called an 800-number for the Postal Service and was told that it had been closed for repairs. But when I asked an employee at the airport post office, he told me that Manoa is a contract operation with privately hired employees and that the post office closed it down because of bookkeeping discrepancies. What's going on and when will it reopen? Manoa post office closed
over books discrepancyOn Jan. 16, postal inspectors audited the Manoa contract station and found "a financial discrepancy," said Honolulu District spokeswoman Felice Broglio. The retail service was closed immediately, although post office box customers are able to continue to receive their mail there, she said.
Broglio declined to go into specifics and said postal inspectors are continuing to look into the situation.
However, "The Manoa contractors were given a 60-day notice of termination," she said.
"The Postal Service has initiated a search for a qualified and bonded interim contractor to provide service until the previous contract is terminated."
After that, it will take about four months to get a new contractor, she said. Manoa residents will be notified by mail when one is chosen.
Meanwhile, Manoa customers are being directed to either the Makiki or Moiliili post offices. Broglio said stamps may be obtained at the nearby Safeway or by calling 1-800-STAMP 24.
