Kamasami Kong, Meseret Mitiku

Guys didn’t miss
a minute of game

OF course today's paper is loaded with stories of yesterday's Super Bowl, but a few things need to be mentioned. Sports Illustrated, determined to kill once and for all belief in the celebrated S.I. "Cover Jinx," put the highly favored Green Bay Packers on the cover of the past two issues, figuring I suppose that this should settle the matter once and for all. This week's edition had quarterback Brett Favre and coach Mike Holmgren having lunch, with cokes in front of them, right after Favre was given the go-ahead to have some beers again ... And Don Murphy of Murphy's Bar & Grill figured he may not have the largest TV screen for viewing the Super Bowl and he may not have the most sets, but he was probably alone in featuring a "standing room only" area - he installed a set in the men's room so nobody need miss a play. Now watch the women complain about inequality - at least one or two had to be without a set for a few moments ...

FORMER First Lady Jean Ariyoshi and her husband, former governor George Ariyoshi, are back from D.C. where they took in their sixth presidential inaugural with the John Waihees. This one was special, says Jeanne, since it was the last one of the century. The Ariyoshis and Waihees watched the inauguration parade from the presidential box, unlike most folks from here who ventured to Washington for the ceremonies. "Of course we know the President," says Jeanne, adding unnecessarily, "That helps." She did allow that the Fourth of July fireworks in Hawaii were "much more spectacular" than the puny display in Washington ...

WE'RE not finished with fireworks, either, what with the Chinese New Year's celebration around the corner. Aside from the traditional Chinatown display, there'll be a ringing in of both the "Year of the Ox" and "Year of the Box" at Market City Shopping Center on Feb. 8. Former U.S. Sen. Hiram Fong and Laurie Chang, owners of the center, will be setting off 60,000 firecrackers. Box car rides will also be availble, with the $1 fee going to American Box Car Racing International ...

Audy in Japan

SO there was singer Audy Kimura on his way to dinner in Waikiki when he answered his car phone and found himself talking with former isle disc jockey Kamasami Kong (aka Bob Zix) who was on the air at FM802 in Osaka, Japan. He was a little dumbstruck when Kong told him some 10 million people were listening to his conversation on the air. He was asked if he'd introduce his song, "When I Look Into Your Eyes," on the air. Kong told him the song's also being used for a 7-Eleven TV commercial. Kong plans to interview Carole Kai next on the air and talk about the Aloha Fun Run/Walk. He still maintains contact with Hawaii through local music he plays there and his website, accessible through Yahoo on the Internet ...

YOU may have read Burl Burlingame's Star-Bulletin piece about haggis as it related to Bobby Burns Day. My friend Bruce Bellingham also has a number of recipes for the Scottish dish. "After the ingredients are sewn into the sheep's stomach," he wrote, "the abdomen of the beast is boiled for three hours. Then it begins to swell. The bloated haggis resembles a disabled dirigible, a wounded medicine ball, a grey goiter. If you don't prick the thing with a needle, disaster may follow." He then recounts the classic Johnny Carson Carnac line: "Answer: Sisss, Booom, Baaaaa!" "Question: "What's the sound of a sheep exploding?" ...

Bits and pieces

CONGRATS to Meseret Mitiku, 17-year-old UH Lab School senior and 4.0 student, named Hawaii's Junior Miss for 1997. Like her sister, Neseret, she's Stanford bound ... Two-faced head in the Advertiser yesterday: "Farrington safety questioned." I trust the Governor linebackers were all cleared ... At the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel's 1997 Senior Skins Tournament, Jack Nicklaus, Ray Floyd, Hale Irwin and Lee Trevino all signed a '97 poster for Arnold Palmer. Prostate cancer kept Arnie out of his first senior skins tourney ...
