Sanford Sandy Parker was one of the old-time business leaders of Wahiawa, a link with the past before encroaching subdivisions, the demise of agriculture and the flooding-ebbing tide of military customers changed the Central Oahu towns character. A polo fan and former player, he was a fixture at the games at Mokuleia.Born in Schenectady, N.Y., Parker left the Merchant Marine when he arrived in Hawaii in the 1930s and went into the real estate business before the post-World War II building boom. He was the developer of Wahiawa Shopping Center in the mid-1950s and of several small housing developments.
Parker, 86, died Tuesday at his Mokuleia home.
His son John recalls what a struggle his father had to persuade other businesses to move into his California Avenue mini-mall.
Thats when shopping centers were not a proven quantity. I remember he would talk to people until he was blue in the face, but they argued, they wanted to be on Kam Highway, John Parker said.
Sandy Parker was one of the charter members of the Wahiawa and Waialua Rotary Clubs. He served for years on the Armys community advisory committee.
Longtime friend Drury Melone repeated one of the stories that Parker liked to tell on himself.
World War II came along and Sandy was made the warden, checking that nobody had lights showing (during blackout). He was walking across a vacant lot one dark night when he heard footsteps. When he stopped, the footsteps stopped. He took off at a high speed for home. The next morning they found this old horse eating grass in that lot. It had been following him on the path. He always said, a good thing he didnt have a gun.
Horses were an important part of Parkers life. He played on local polo teams until he was 65.
In 1975 he lost an eye playing, said John Parker. He quit playing but was still going to games, even when he was in a wheelchair.
Survivors are sons John S. and Robert H.; daughter Pamela Parker Young; brother Hunter C.; five grandchildren; and a great-grand child.
