Yamanaka joined the bank in 1994. Previously he was promotions officer and assistant manager in the marketing department. He also worked at one year as Hawaii marketing coordinator for Foodmaker Inc., which owns the Jack-in-the Box chain and other restaurants on the mainland.

Yamanaka is a member of the American Marketing Association Honolulu Chapter and the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce.

He got a bachelor's degree in business administration at the University of Washington and a master's in business administration at the University of Hawaii in 1994.
