Wallace:
’Bows weren’t out
to get Whitehead’

Star-Bulletin wire services

Wyoming coach Joby Wright thinks teams were out to hurt junior guard LaDrell Whitehead, the Western Athletic Conference's leading scorer at 23.7 points per game, who sustained a dislocated left elbow during Saturday's game at Hawaii.

"He has no fear and he would challenge people, and because of that, people would knock him down," Wright said. "I've sent tapes to Bobby Dibler (the WAC's officiating supervisor)."

Hawaii coach Riley Wallace disputed his team's role in Whitehead's injury. He said Whitehead was driving to the basket at full speed and was simply knocked down as Hawaii players tried to block the shot.

"Wright can say what he wants," Wallace said.

In last night's WACgame:

Southern Methodist 63, Air Force 59: At Air Force Academy, Colo., Jay Poerner scored 21 points and the Mustangs rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to beat the Falcons.

Southern Methodist improved to 12-4 overall and 4-2 in the WAC. Air Force is 5-10, 1-5.
