Helping people with quadriplegia

William D. O'Connor takes over as president of the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific as it plans for an "independent living" facility in Waipahu using a $1.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The facility is for persons with spine injuries that resulted in quadriplegia. Devices will be installed to help tenants.

"Our health-care environment is changing and evolving dramatically," O'Connor said.

He came from the Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital in Warren, Ohio, where he had been president since 1990 and implemented a $10 million construction program and strategic planning process.

O'Connor also was the chief executive officer at Emanuel Rehabilitation Center in Portland, Ore.; the Alaska Treatment Center in Anchorage; and at Burke Rehabilitation Center in White Plains, N.Y.
