Donaldson wins teen 10K

Michael Donaldson won the Teen Great Aloha Run for the second straight year yesterday with a time of 37 minutes, 9 seconds for the 10-kilometer race from Aloha Tower to Kapiolani Park.

The 17-year-old Donaldson finished 1:36 ahead of runner-up Marco Senelly, 15. Will Phillips, 16, was third in 38:58.

Victoria Chang, 14, took the girls' division in 42:38. Lisanne Chun, 15, was second in 48:04 and Carolyn Berger, 16, third in 48:04.

LADIES OPEN GOLF TICKETS

Tickets for the Cup Noodles Hawaiian Ladies Open, which will be held Feb. 19-22 at Kapolei Golf Course, are available at Nevada Bob's locations, the Pro-Am Golf Shop and Kapolei Golf Course. Prices are $10 for a daily ticket and $15 for the entire tournament. Information: 671-5050.

SOFTBALL GRAND SLAM

The Coors Light Grand Slam of Softball series begins next month for men's and women's teams in Hawaii.

Men's class B and women's classes C and D tournaments will be held Feb. 7-9 at Hickam Air Force Base fields. Men's C and D tournaments are scheduled for Feb. 21-23, also at Hickam.

Teams that compete in all four legs of the series and accumulate the highest number of points in each division earn round-trip airfare and hotel accommodations for 10 players to play in a USSSA tournament in Las Vegas in June.

Entry fee for the Hawaii legs of the series is $180 per team per tournament, $200 if the team is not registered with USSSA. Final meetings will be held at 7 p.m. the Tuesday before each tournament begins at The Palms Club. All entry fees are due at the meeting.

Additional legs will be held in all divisions in March, April and May. For information, call Larry Baird at 423-1198.

WEIGHTLIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Honolulu Open Weightlifting Championships will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Nuuanu YMCA Weight Room at 1441 Pali Highway.

TOURNAMENT TICKETS ON SALE

Tickets for the 1997 Western Athletic Conference men's and women's basketball tournaments are on sale.

Tickets made be ordered through TicketMaster at (702) 474-4000 or the Thomas & Mack Center box office at (702) 895-3900. Lower level tournament ticket packages cost $120, upper level $90.

Hotel rooms are reserved for participating teams fans until Feb. 16. Host hotels are: Excalibur (1-800-937-777); MGM Grand (1-800-929-1111); Tropicana (1-800-521-8767); Riviera (1-800-634-6753); Sahara (1-800-634-6666).

NFL KIDS’ CLINIC

A free clinic, featuring current and retired National Football League players, will be held for youngsters ages 9-18 Jan. 29 at the Mililani High School football field from 2-4:30 p.m.

A photo and autograph session will be held for youngsters and parents from 4:30-5 p.m.

Registration sheets are available through all Mililani elementary schools, Mililani High School, the Mililani YMCA, all Mililani recreation centers and Castle & Cooke Homes Hawaii sales information center in Mililani Mauka.



MARINES’ 10-MILE ROAD RACE

The 3rd Marine Regiment will stage its fourth annual 10-mile road race at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii-Kaneohe Bay Feb. 7 starting at 6:15 a.m.

The course will be out and back from the base's Pop Warner field.

General entry fee is $15 but military personnel with identification may enter for $12.

A $5 late fee will be charged after Jan. 31.

KAYAK AWARD

Former Mid-Pacific Institute kayaker James Farnum and the Molokai Swim Team have been awarded the grants by the Duke Kahanamoku Foundation.

Farnum received $550 to attend the U.S. Canoe and Kayak Team trials in in May. The swim team received $1,000 to compete in in long and short course sessions on Maui.
