OPENING

Hawaii Pacific University Art Gallery, 45-045 Kamehameha Highway, 233-3167. "Addition, Subtraction," mixed media works on canvas and paper by local artist Jason Teraoka, who describes the exhibition as containing "abstract forms and recognizable images, combined." Opens with a 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday reception. Continues through March 7.

Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center, 2841 Baldwin Avenue, 572-6560. "Members Show" juried by Alan M. Leitner opens with a 6 to 8 p.m. Friday reception. Show continues through March 8.

University of Hawaii Art Gallery, Art Building, 956-6888. "A Journey Through Chinese Hell: Hell Scrolls from Taiwan," depict through two sets of scrolls the severe chastisements in Chinese hell, and give insight into Chinese culture and ethics. The scrolls are on loan from the Smithsonian Institution. A panel discussion is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Art Building auditorium. An opening ceremony and reception will be held 3:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday, with Taoist blessing by Rev. Duane Pang, traditional Chinese music and lion dance. The gallery will be closed Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On view through Feb. 21.

Arts of Paradise, International Marketplace, 924-2787. "The Abstract Mind of Robert Kelsey," on view in January. Kelsey reflects on his 40 years of art in Hawaii, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today.

Contemporary Museum, 2411 Makiki Heights Drive, 526-0232. "Shirts and Skins," works by 14 artists who deal with the human figure, on view through Feb. 2. The Contemporary Museum at First Hawaiian Center, 999 Bishop St. "Artists/Hawaii," works by 22 artists featured in the book of the same title, on view through Feb. 19. Artists include Allyn Bromley, Alan Leitner, Rick Mills, Franco Salmoiraghi, Tadashi Sato, Laura Smith, Suzanne Wolfe and Doug Young.

Contemporary Museum's Honolulu Advertiser Gallery, 605 Kapiolani Blvd., 525-8066. "ASoWbSAoNPT," works by Hawaii artists, on view through Wednesday. Artists include Dan Calhoune, Kimberly Chai, Don Ed Hardy, Keiko Hatano, Dean Sakamoto, Pia Stern and Michael Takemoto.

Davies Pacific Center, 841 Bishop St. Landscape drawings by Kit Cameron, on view through Jan. 30. Cameron explores the intersection between the ordinary and the sacred realm in drawings with crayon on black paper.

East Hawaii Cultural Center Gallery, 141 Kalakaua St., Hilo, Big Island, 808-961-5711. "Women's Beauty/Women's Fate: Myths & Metaphors," mixed media work and installations by Phan Nguyen Barker, on view in January. The Center Stage Gallery features the traveling exhibition "Vietnam: Awakening the Dragon."

Foyer Gallery, Leeward Community College, 96-045 Ala Ike St., Pearl City. Oil paintings by William Bartlett, on view through Jan. 22.

Gallery Iolani, Windward Community College, 45-720 Kea'ahala Road, 235-7346. "Humanity Above Nation," reflecting on the influences of two young men in improving relations between Japan and the United States. The Kenny Endo Taiko Drum Ensemble, Joseph Muratsuchi of the Joseph Heco Society and Minoru Shinoda, professor emeritus of history, will be at the reception 4 to 7 p.m. tomorrow. Show continues through Jan. 31.

Gordon Biersch restaurant, Aloha Tower Marketplace, 599-4877. Paintings and drawings by M. Goodwill, on view through Feb. 28. Goodwill depicts palm trees, flowers and North Shore landscapes; her mural adorns the outside wall of the Wave Waikiki.

Honolulu Academy of Arts, 900 S. Beretania St., 532-8700. More than 70 pieces of Japanese lacquer art from a private collection, some with inlaid and carved designs, and some dating from the 16th century, on view through June 29. Free admission on the first Wednesday of each month.

"Modern Design, 1920-1960" reflects the century's major changes, through March 16. Silver, glass and ceramics highlight changes in the arts of the United States, Russia and Europe.

"Artists of Hawaii," an annual exhibition of resident artists' works, on view through Sunday. The juror, Roy Slade from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, selected 73 works by 49 artists, among them Ginger Bowen, Mark Donham, Kip Krieger and Mika McCann.

New works by Shigeru Miyamoto, the fourth recipient of the Catherine E.B. Cox Award for excellence in visual arts, will be on view through Sunday. Miyamoto, an artist and teacher, is known for large-scale, abstract ceramic sculptures and effigy vessels.

CLASSES

Calligraphy classes: Rob Thompson teaches "Roman Capitals: Queen of Alphabets," Jan. 25. Classes are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Volcano Art Center. Call 967-8222, Big Island.

Pottery classes: The City & County Parks & Recreation Department has registration today and Friday for 10 weeks of classes. Tuition $15. Call Paula at 395-3096.

Studio classes: The Academy Art Center has basic drawing, printmaking, ceramics, weaving, jewelry and other arts for adults in 14-week classes, beginning Tuesday. Call 532-8741.

Classes for children meet on Saturday mornings or afternoons, Feb. 1 through April 19. Tuition is $100.

Funding for folk arts: Applications for the 1997 Folk Arts Apprenticeships will be accepted through Jan. 31. The program, aimed at preserving traditional cultural art forms, supports one-to-one training between a master artist and an experienced apprentice with awards of up to $4,000. The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts approved 18 apprenticeship teams for 1996, in such arts as Hawaiian fishnet making, ki ho'alu, Cantonese opera and Laotian wood carving.

Works on Paper: National exhibit will accept slides of work in any media on paper, including photography, through Feb. 1. New York City art critic Jerry Saltz will be the juror.
