Mobile classrooms take
art to students statewide

Q: I've heard about bookmobiles, but what is the Art Mobile? I recently saw it parked at Noelani School in Manoa.

A: We caught up with the Art Mobile, a traveling art exhibit/classroom for public school students, when it was at Manoa School. It may surprise you to know that the Art Mobile has been around since 1969. It initially was funded by the state Legislature and is part of the Art Education Office in the state Department of Education.

There are two vans, one on Oahu and one for the neighbor islands. Resource teacher Dean Cox, aided by driver Tom Holmes, takes the mobile classroom to schools around Oahu.

The current Oahu exhibit is on "Artistry and Tradition of Craft," while the van now on Maui is devoted to "The Built Environment."

"We usually feature local artists," Cox said.

It takes about 31/2 years for the vans to make a circuit of all the public schools in the state.

Both vans measure about 40 feet long, 9 feet wide and 12 feet high. Cox said Hawaii is the only state that has such a program.
