King, civil rights prince, honored

On Aug. 28, 1963, in Washington, D.C., the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King said he had a dream of equality for all. In ceremonies today and yesterday, his words resonated again throughout Hawaii.

The Nagasaki Peace Bell on the city grounds was rung in a ceremony this morning, followed by a mid-morning parade down Kalakaua Avenue to Kapiolani Park, then a Unity Rally at the Kapiolani Bandstand.

Yesterday, about 250 admirers showed up at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church near Hickam Air Force Base to pay respects to the late civil rights leader who died from an assassin's bullet in Memphis, Tenn., on April 4, 1968.

Lawyer gives his reason
why Baer got shorter term

Marine Lance Cpl. William Baer, sentenced to 25 years in the May 1996 murder of Lance Cpl. Juan Guerrero, received a lighter sentence than other Marines sentenced earlier because he didn't wish the victim serious harm, his attorney said.

"I think the evidence showed that he was clearly the only one who did not want or desire Lance Cpl. Guerrero to die or to suffer any life-threatening injuries," said Howard Luke, who represented Baer, 20.

"His problem was he entered into an agreement with the other three (Marines) and when the train left the station, he was on board, so to speak. He didn't get off even though he had no idea where its final destination would be," Luke said.

Baer was sentenced over the weekend after pleading guilty Wednesday to second-degree murder. He was the only one of four Marine defendants to plead guilty to the lesser charge of unpremeditated murder.

Mililani parents push for traffic light

Traffic monitor Gloriana Lane makes an imposing figure clad in reflective vest, neon yellow visor and her red STOP sign held aloft in the middle of Meheula Parkway.

She makes eye contact with approaching motorists to make sure they see her and the children crossing perhaps the second busiest intersection in Mililani Mauka.

"There's one, two, stop signs," said Lane, pointing to one several feet away and another on the opposite side of Meheula. "When I'm in that crosswalk, I become (stop signs) three and four."

Crosswalks alone apparently haven't been successful in curbing the speeding on Meheula Parkway.

Parents and school officials are pushing for a traffic light on Meheula at Makaikai Street - the road that leads to Mililani Mauka Elementary School and the Olaloa retirement community.

The city has determined a traffic light at the intersection is not warranted at this time but will continue to monitor the area, said Paul Won, acting chief of the city's traffic engineering section.

Party guest arrested
in sex assault on girl

A 40-year-old man is in police custody pending charges in the sex assault and kidnapping of a 7-year-old girl Saturday night in Kahaluu.

Police said a family party was going on at an Ahaolelo Road home when a guest lured the victim into a nearby banana patch about 11:20 p.m. He told the victim another little girl was there asking for her, police said. He reportedly dragged her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.

Members of her family were alerted the man had taken her into the banana patch. They began a frantic search and found the girl, who reported what happened. The suspect was located as he was leaving the banana patch, and was held by family members until police arrived to arrest him.

Waipahu father accused of
hitting son with bat

Police yesterday charged a 54-year-old Waipahu man with second-degree assault after he allegedly struck his teen-age son with a baseball bat.

The boy, 14, was treated for injuries at St. Francis-West Hospital and released.

Neemia Faaitu Sr. of Aniani Place was charged with second-degree assault. His bail is $5,000.

The alleged assault occurred during a 7:30 a.m. argument between Faaitu and his son, who had driven the family car without permission, police said. The boy also was arrested for auto theft.
