Ines Cayaban services
Friday and Saturday

What was supposed to be a brief stopover to visit friends in Hawaii, turned into 65 years of community service for Ines V. Cayaban.

Cayaban, 92, was born in Claveria, Cagayan Valley, Ilocos Norte, the Philippines. She died last Monday in St. Francis Hospital.

She was en route to Columbia University in New York to continue her studies when her friends persuaded her to stay in Hawaii.

After enrolling at the University of Hawaii, Cayaban began working as a district nurse at Palama Settlement, making her the second Filipina public health nurse employed in the territory of Hawaii.

In 1936, Cayaban directed the rice festival for the art academy's first series of international cultural programs and presented native entertainment for the armed forces during the war.

After leaving Palama Settlement, Cayaban became a health educator and home nursing program director for the American Red Cross and the Hawaii Cancer Society.

She wrote and published several pieces including "A Goodly Heritage," a book about the Filipino contributions to Hawaii. Before retiring in 1970, Cayaban served as supervisor of several community outreach programs for the state Department of Health, Tuberculin Skin Testing Service, Christmas Seal Association, Immigrant Health Services and Oahu Tuberculosis and Health Association.

She joined many organizations including the Philippine, Hawaii and American Nurses associations; Hawaii and American Public Health associations; Filipino University Association; Christian Women's Association; Zonta Club of Honolulu; Filipino Women's Committee of the International Institute; World Brotherhood, and the Pan-Pacific Southeast Asian Women's Association. She also organized the Filipiniana Dance Academy, was co-founder of the Cagayan Valley Association, was on the Filipino Chorale board and was a former executive Hawaii Dance Association board member.

In 1961, Cayaban was honored as the mother role model in the Filipino Model Family.

She later attended the White House Conference on Aging and was listed in "Who's Who of American Women" and the "Biographical Directory of Noteworthy Men and Women of Hawaii."

After retirement, Cayaban continued to teach. She coordinated and supervised the Immigrant Nurses Review classes and taught English and Ilocano to adults.

A very religious person, Cayaban was an active participant at Aldersgate Church.

She served as lay speaker and was a delegate to many conventions including the First Asian-American Convention Council of the United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband J.O., son Jess Dante, two grandchildren and a great-grandson.
