Silverswords end their
losing streak

Darnell Clavon scored 25 points and Chaminade won its first basketball game of 1997 last night, running away from Chapman, 68-53, at McCabe Gym.

The Silverswords (3-9), who ended a five-game losing skid, had not won since Dec. 30. Also in double figures for Chaminade were Damian Cephas (13) and Roman Rivera (12).

Hawaii Pacific 88, Lewis-Clark State 54: At Blaisdell Arena, Llewellyn Smalley hit four 3-pointers en route to 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the No. 6 Sea Warriors over the Warriors.

HPU (15-2) hit six 3-pointers in the opening seven minutes, jumping out to a 29-14 lead. L-C State (5-8), which got 25 points and 11 rebounds from Jeremiah Wynott, never got closer than 14.

BYU-Hawaii 89, Central Washington 83: At Cannon Activities Center, Ionatana Enosa scored 20 points and the 11th-ranked Seasiders (13-3) got 32 points from the free-throw line in holding off the Wildcats.

Guard Chris Bates scored 18 of his 19 points in the first half to give BYU-Hawaii a 50-36 halftime lead. Pa'ulasi Matavao added 18 points as the Seasiders won their ninth at home.

Hawaii-Hilo 92, Seattle Pacific 76: At Afook-Chinen Civic, Merriel Jenkins and Rodney Odrick combined for 46 points as the Vulcans stunned the Falcons, co-leaders in the Pacific West Conference.

UH-Hilo (4-10, 1-2) trailed, 39-35, at halftime before roaring back with 57 second-half points on 65 percent shooting from the floor. Jenkins, second in Pac West scoring, finished with 28 points and Odrick had 26.

The Falcons (11-4, 2-1) got 14 points each from Geoff Ping and Brady Deal.
