Eight University of Hawaii athletes have been named to Western Athletic Conference all-academic teams.

They are senior volleyball player Angelica Ljungquist (3.31 grade point average in political science); football players Lonn Kalama (junior, 3.40 GPA in political science), Bobby Singh (sophomore, 3.25 GPA in family resources) and Tyler Tanigawa (junior, 3.41 GPA in food science and human nutrition); sophomore cross-country runner Rachel Leber (3.57 GPA in biology); and soccer players Nicole Arakawa (senior, 3.48 GPA in secondary education), Mylinh Fee (senior, 3.25 GPA in art) and Denise Tsukada (junior, 3.28 GPA in psychology).

UH SWIMMERS WIN

The University of Hawaii men's and women's swimming teams ended disappointing dual seasons yesterday on a high note, defeating the University of the Pacific at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

The men won easily, 123-79, while the women edged out a 106-97 victory.

Freestyle swimmers Peter Lindh and Jeff Stanford led the UH men with two wins apiece.

The UH women were tied at 93 points in their meet until the 200-meter freestyle relay team of Christine Berkmann, Jamie Tamanaha, Heidi Hausknecht and Becky Thompson clinched the win.

The men finished the season at 4-6 and the women at 3-9.

PREP VOLLEYBALL ALL-AMERICANS

Led by Punahou's Tehani Miyashiro, three Hawaii high school players were named to the Volleyball magazine All-America team.

Miyashiro, a 5-foot-7 senior hitter who has verbally committed to the University of Hawaii, was named to the second team. Honorable mention went to Punahou junior Lindsey Berg, a 5-8 setter/hitter, and 5-9 senior hitter Marjorie Nepo of University High, who has not decided where she will play college ball.

Nepo's sister, Fiona, is an All-American setter at Nebraska.

Also accorded honorable mention was Jessica Sudduth, a 6-2 hitter from Esperanza High in California. Sudduth verbally committed to Hawaii in November, as did 5-11 hitter Jemika Stevens from Olympia, Wash.
