Q: Please help! I've been writing to the Child Support Enforcement Agency for the past four months. All I need to know is the status of a modification hearing that was held on Aug. 26. I've written to my case worker, the assistant administrator and the administrator of the Child Support Enforcement Agency. They are not responding to my correspondences. In the past, they usually responded within 30 days. They also would send a letter acknowledging receipt of the correspondence. But I haven't received anything! Whom may I address this problem to? Patience required when
dealing with AGs officeYou did not leave a name and number so we could not specifically trace your problem or find out the status for you.
In general, the answer is to be VERY patient because the agency, which is part of the state attorney general's office, is beset with thousands of cases.
Also, the agency is supposed to have a staff of 165, but it's never been staffed at that maximum level because of budget constraints, said spokeswoman Shirley Farineau.
"That's not an excuse," Farineau said, but an explanation of probably why you have not been able to get a timely response.
The agency is trying to get computerized to speed the process, she said.
You probably already know this, but, Farineau said, there are four numbers you can call to try for a response, including 587-3764, which lays out the steps you can take.
Other numbers on Oahu are 587-3755, 587-3770 and 587-3768. Or, you may go to the agency's office at 680 Iwilei Road, Suite 490. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
An important note: You must provide a personal identification number (PIN) and Social Security number before you can get any information about your case. If you do not have a PIN, call the Child Support Lock Box at 536-7227 and you will be assigned one. It will take three to four days to receive your PIN by mail.
