Star-Bulletin
Anthony Carter continues to be the spark behind the University of Hawaii men's basketball team. The junior transfer from Saddleback (Calif.) Community College is the team's leading scorer, its top assist man and has the most steals.
He also has won the WAC Player of the Week award once this season - and was named as one of the other nominees on Monday for the Pacific Division honors after scoring 30 points at Air Force and 19 - including the winning free throws with one second left in the game - at UNLV.
The 6-2, 185-pound guard is averaging 18.0 points, 6.2 assists and 3.1 steals per game for the Rainbows, who are 10-3 overall and 2-1 in the WAC.
In the three WAC games, Carter has stepped it up to 22.7 points per game - third-best in the league behind Shea Seals of Tulsa (25.0) and LaDrell Whitehead of Wyoming (24.0).
Carter leads the WAC in steals with his 3.1 average.
Ironically, Air Force guard Jarmica Reese - who had 21 points and 13 rebounds in the Falcons' upset of Hawaii last Thursday - was named WAC Pacific Division Player of the Week on Monday. WACS TOP PLAYERS
Reese a 6-3 junior guard, also had 24 points in Air Force's overtime loss to San Diego State on Saturday.
Another UH foe, New Mexico's sophomore center, Kenny Thom-as, was named the Mountain Division's top player for the week.
Thomas, a 6-8 center, had a total of 36 points and 16 rebounds in victories over Texas Christian and Southern Methodist.
UH head coach Riley Wallace said he brought his team back to the locker room just before the extravagant pregame fireworks show at the Thomas and Mack Center. VEGAS FLOOR SHOW
Star-Bulletin sports writer Paul Arnett recalled a quote from the legendary Jimmy Valvano while the fireworks were exploding and his North Carolina State team watched.
"Sounds like a Saturday night in Queens," Jimmy V. cracked.
Wallace said he managed to have some fun with the UNLV band and student section, which was part of the near-sellout crowd of 17,133 fans.
"I blew them a few kisses before the game," Wallace said.
Hawaii, which still managed to get two votes in this week's Associated Press poll, fell in the Rating Percentage Index this week from No. 42 in the nation to No. 57, out of 305 team RPI DROP
