Line up for country dance

We'll be treated to lion dances soon enough, with Chinese New Year arriving Feb. 8, but for this weekend, it'll be line dances.

Country and western fans get to strut their stuff for more than $5,000 in cash and prizes Saturday and Sunday as part of the TNN Wildhorse Saloon Contest Tour. The contest marks the recent relaunch of The Nashville Network.

Dancers will compete at Windward Mall, in three categories: male line dancing, female line dancing and couples. First-place winners in each category will win $1,000 per person.

The contest is open to anyone age 18 and older. Registration is on a first-come basis, and there are no entry fees. Details are available at Oceanic, Windward Mall or by calling the TNN Dance Line at (206) 521-8428.

Art ‘Off the Wall’

It will be a day of storytelling and performance art at Contemporary Museum's "Art Off the Wall: Performance Art Responding to Visual Art," a family program with performances at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday.

The event will begin with a 20-minute shadow puppet play, performed with mirrors and video by Jeff Gere and Milky Way Bouray. Staged will be Ravel's opera "L'Enfant et les Sortileges." In this tale, a boy throws a temper tantrumin his room and destroys objects, which come to life to teach him some surreal lessons.

In the program's second half, small groups will visit five stations throughout the museum to take in performance art inspired by the "Shirts and Skins" exhibition, punctuated by dances choreographed by Yukie Shiroma.

Reservations are required; call 526-1322. Attendance is free to TCM members and children 12 and younger, $5 for nonmembers.

Soundgarden slated for 2 shows

OK, so Stone Temple Pilots was a no-show, but the announcement of Soundgarden's shows oughtta compensate for that bit of ill fortune.

One of Seattle's finest, Soundgarden is set to appear 2 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Neal Blaisdell Arena. Tickets for both shows go on sale Saturday.

Tickets for the Maui show, at $23.25, will be available at the MACC box office, all Connection outlets and on Maui at Tempo Music-Kaahumanu and Lahaina Shopping Center.

Tickets for the Oahu show are $20 balcony and $25 for loges, both reserved seating, and $25 for the floor (no seats).

Tickets will be available at the Blaisdell box office and all Connection outlets: Jelly's stores, Tempo's House of Music Ala Moana, Tempo Music, UH Campus Center and the Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel MTI desk. Or charge by phone at 545-4000 or 1-(800)-333-3388.

Soundgarden, who rode the grunge wave, just bordering on metal, with "Badmotorfinger" and the rapturous "Superunknown" are currently getting airplay with "Pretty Noose," "Burden in my Hand" and "Blow Up the Outside World" from its "Down on the Upside" disc.
