Big Isle villa in
Heart Ball auction

REMEMBER when items at charity auctions were dinners for two or Neighbor Island trips? Those things may still be available, but the price of bidding is going up. Take the "Heart Ball" for example. When the ball takes place Feb. 15 at the Sheraton-Waikiki, one of the items up for bid will be a condominium at Waikoloa Villas. The generous donors of the one-bedroom condo are Jim & Patty Schuler, longtime American Heart Association supporters. The upset price for the villa, should you feel the need to bring along your checkbook, is $80,000. That may sound like a bundle, but it's been appraised at $110,000, so someone might end up with a bargain-priced second home or Big Isle retirement villa ...

ON the road to recovery, or venturing out once again on the comeback trail, is hopelessly dedicated marathon runner Randy Havre. The head of Honolulu Venture Capital, Havre had major reconstructive surgery on his knee just five months ago. You'd think that might prompt one to kick back and watch others throw their own joints out of joint. Not Havre. The mustachioed demon runner has a "cold pack" bet with Lisa Okamoto of Bank of Hawaii for the Maui Marathon in March. If successful, he plans to put on his HURT shirt once again - that's the one proudly worn by members of the Hawaiian Ultra Running Team ...

WOMEN just hate to be kidded about talking so much and being wordy, sloughing off such notions as male chauvinism. Then how do you explain that the venerable four-line Girl Scout Promise has been rewritten for today, and now is 11 lines long? I pointed this out to a male colleague and he was aghast: "Only eleven?" he asked ... Don Carroll of Oceanic Cable is adding local news to the national CNN feeds. He's arranged with KITV to carry five minute news casts that staffers prepare hourly from 6 a.m. to midnight, starting Feb. 10 ...

Schiller in Playboy?

THE February issue of Playboy magazine has a mention of local adman Marty Schiller, but thankfully no racy photos. It occurs toward the end of a lengthy interview with Marty's brother, Lawrence Schiller, the multi-faceted entrepreneur who currently has a best-selling book on O.J. Simpson but who's also done books on Jack Ruby, Gary Gilmore, Lenny Bruce, Marilyn Monroe and Lee Harvey Oswald - often in collaboration with Norman Mailer. My personal involvement with Lawrence is minimal, having met him at the "Thrilla in Manila" when I sat next to Mailer at the Ali-Frasier fight. And I got him in touch with Honey Bruce, enabling him to do his book on her late husband. He mentions his brother by saying his father was very proud of Marty because he was "an incredible athlete." And when Marty, 2 years his junior, beat him at tennis, that ended Lawrence's athletic career and careened him into photography, writing and book packaging. So if you don't like his work, blame Marty ...

SPEAKING of writers, William Styron, author of "Sophie's Choice" and "The Confessions of Nat Turner," among others, will speak and sign books at the Lodge at Koele on Feb. 8 as part of the Lanai Visiting Artist Program. Call the Lodge for details ... Sam Sanford on Aston Hotels closing down beachboy Turkey Love's concession on the beach fronting the Waikikian: "Chick, Panama, Blue and all the rest are turning in their watery graves." He adds, "You'd think they'd make a spot for this Waikiki icon, one of the last of a breed of guys that made the beach's reputation what it is."

Puttin’ on the Ritz

WHO'D have imagined a Nanakuli girl becoming a big song stylist in possibly the most prestigious hotel in San Francisco? But there is Bonet Moriarty, star vocalist in the Ritz-Carlton on Nob Hill, and while she may sound French-Irish, she was born an Allosada. You may recall her as vocalist for Kit Samson and his Sound Advice at the Kahala Hilton before relocating to the Bay area and the lounge that serves as a before and after stop for visitors to the Ritz's dining room, considered by many the finest place to eat in the city ...
