Miles, who coached the Rainbows' wide receivers in Bob Wagner's final season, would handle the same position for the Bulldogs.
Hill also recently interviewed an assistant at the University of Montana. He said last night that he probably wouldn't make a decision until after meeting with his staff. An announcement is expected this weekend.
Rainbows head coach Fred vonAppen recently gave Fresno State permission to interview Miles, who was one of two survivors of Wagner's regime.
It would be Miles' seventh job in 10 years. He also has been an assistant at Cincinnati, Northern Illinois, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Indiana State. He recently described himself as a professional coach looking to move up.
If hired, joining Fresno State's new staff would appear to be a move in the right direction. Unlike the Rainbows, the Bulldogs could make him an offer he couldn't refuse.
First, the commitment among the Fresno State followers is considerable. The high stakes facilities and lower academic standards also make recruiting much easier than here.
Second, Hill recently signed a five-year deal, while vonAppen still doesn't know if his three-year contract will be automatically rolled over this spring.
Third, the salary range for Fresno State assistants is $63,000-70,000, which is more than what vonAppen can offer.
"I'd like to make him a counter offer," vonAppen said last night. "But right now, there's not much we can do."
Miles isn't the only assistant who could be saying aloha in the coming days. Offensive line coach Walt Klinker is considering a similar position at Kansas.
Although Klinker, 58, is one of vonAppen's closer friends, he would be joining a Big 12 program and reuniting with new head coach Terry Allen.
Klinker served as Allen's offensive coordinator at Northern Iowa before joining vonAppen's staff last January. It would be a chance for Klinker to return to the Midwest, where he coached for numerous years.
"We don't really want to lose any of our assistants," vonAppen said. "But I know what it's like to be in their position. Sometimes you have to go where the greener pastures take you."
VonAppen also announced the official signing of seven junior college transfers. They are: San Francisco City College receiver John Kirby, San Jose City College offensive lineman Jose Martinez, Monterey Peninsula College tight end Jimmy McClain, Orange Coast College defensive end Mark Mollner, Golden West College receiver Wesley Morris, Ricks Junior College quarterback Dan Robinson and Sierra College defensive back Ron Wood.
