Hawaii's Carter named WACplayer of week

Staff and wire reports

DENVER - Anthony Carter, who led Hawaii to an upset of No. 18 New Mexico and a victory over Memphis, was named yesterday as the Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division player of the week.

Shaun Igo of Rice earned the WAC Mountain Division honor.

Carter, a 6-foot-2 junior guard, scored 26 points in Hawaii's victory over Memphis in the Rainbow Classic and came back with 18 points and seven assists in the Rainbows' win over New Mexico in the WAC season opener on Saturday.

"I was very surprised," Carter said yesterday after Hawaii's practice. "I feel pretty good about it, but I want more than one."

Carter is the team's second-leading scorer with a 16.8 average and leads the WAC in assists with 6.4 per game.

Igo, a 6-11 center, averaged 21.5 points and nine rebounds in leading Rice to wins over Navy and Pennsylvania.

Carter becomes the second Rainbow to gain WAC player of the week honors this season. Junior forward Eric Ambrozich was named Dec. 16.
