Uncommon people

Author Kathleen Norris and David Dwyer will lead a conversation on "Saints and Us," 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at St. John Vianney Church in Kailua. They will discuss Norris' best-selling book "The Cloisterwalk" and the plays of St. Therese of Lisieux, in honor of the 100th anniversary of her death. Writer lands on Lanai

Travel writer and social historian Jonathan Raban will speak 8:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Lodge at Koele. In "Bad Land," he tells of Montana homesteaders at the start of the century. Raban's books include "Hunting Mister Heartbreak," "For Love & Money" and "Coasting,." He is editor of "The Oxford Book of the Sea." Call 565-7300, Lanai.

Script workshop

Cheeah and Fairoh Carolingian present "The Power of Writing Movies" at Cameron Center, Wailuku, Maui, noon to 5 p.m. Jan. 12.

Updated guide to Maui county combines anecdotes, descriptions of places to see and the editors' "Best Bets" with reviews of hotels and other residences, eateries and activities. General information includes weather descriptions, a calendar of annual events and tips for families with young children, couples planning to wed and the physically impaired.

The food section carries the weight of Early's opinion (she's the dining columnist for the Lahaina News), with some reviews almost a page long.
