HPU (13-1), ranked eighth in the NAIA, got 24 points from junior guard Llewellyn Smalley in running away from the Panthers, 82-65, at Blaisdell Arena. The finale of the HPU Coca-Cola New Year's Classic left the host Sea Warriors and Brigham Young-Hawaii with identical 2-0 records and a share of the tournament title.
"Whenever Juergen is having an off night, we all come together to make up for it," said Smalley, who added 7 rebounds and 5 assists before fouling out. "I think we played great defense tonight and Rob (junior forward Parker) came off the bench and did a great job."
Parker's three blocks, two steals and four points ignited a 17-3 run over a 312 minute-span that gave HPU a commanding 68-46 lead. The Sea Warriors also hit three of their nine 3-pointers during the spurt, two by Jimmy Harris, en route to winning their 11th in a row.
Harris finished with 15 points and J.J. Lucas added 14. Parker, named the tournament MVP despite playing just 17 minutes last night, had nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Panthers (8-7) got 20 points from Jasen Fronabarger and 15 points from all-tournament selection Shaun Bass.
Drury coach Gary Stanfield felt his team contained HPU's big men Malbeck (7-foot-1) and Lucas (6-10) but "Smalley stole the limelight," said the coach of the NCAA Division II team. "And then you have Parker coming off the bench. HPU is not a one- or two-dimensional team by any means. I doubt that we'll play a team that is more talented or taller all season."
Also named to the all-tournament team were BYU-Hawaii's Pa'ulasi Matavao, Jeff Chamberlain of Concordia and HPU's Lucas and Smalley.
