Wahine start play
in WAC

The red-hot University of Hawaii women's basketball team, winner of six consecutive games, opens its first Western Athletic Conference basketball season with games at 5 p.m. today at Fresno State and 3:30 p.m. Saturday at San Jose State.

The Wahine and the Bulldogs both start WAC play with 7-3 records. The Bulldogs are led by junior forward Janee Brown, who averages 15.7 points and 10 rebounds a game.

San Jose State also is a new member of the WAC. The Spartans (4-6) open their conference schedule tonight against San Diego State. Senior forward Kari Steele is the Spartans' top scorer at 13.8 points per game.

Hawaii's Nani Cockett is averaging 21.3 points per game, good for 26th in the nation and first in the WAC. She also is second in the WAC in 3-point field goal percentage (.472), blocked shots (20) and steals (34). Cockett is shooting .503 from the floor, third in the conference.
