Aloha Bowl
By Paul Arnett
drew successful ratings
on television
Star-BulletinThe overnight television ratings for the Jeep Eagle Aloha Bowl left a big smile on chief operating officer Lenny Klompus' face. According to ABC-TV network officials, the 15th annual game, between the U.S. Naval Academy and California, did a 6.1 and a 19 share of the televisions in use.
One Nielsen ratings point generally equals about 997,000 households, but on Christmas Day, that number exceeds one million. Each household is equal to 4.25 people.
This overnight rating is the highest since the Georgia Tech-Stanford game in 1991. Once all the numbers are in next week, the game has a chance to crack a 7.0 rating and a 20 share.
"Last year, our final numbers were a 6.3 and a 19 share," Klompus said last night. "And that meant 27.5 million people watched all or part of the game.
"If we do reach a 7 rating when all the numbers are in next Thursday, it would mean at least 30 million people tuned in to watch all or part of the game.
"It's a big number that we're very excited about. If the trend holds up, it will be the second- or third-most watched Aloha Bowl."
The most-watched Aloha Bowl is the University of Hawaii-Michigan State matchup of 1989. That game did a 7.5 final number. The 1988 affair between Houston and Washington State did a 7.4.
The Aloha Bowl's main competition was the National Basketball Association game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Phoenix Suns. That did an overnight number of 4.9. The prime time NBA game between the world champion Chicago Bulls and the Denver Pistons had an overnight number of 6.2.
"To be right in there with Michael Jordan and the NBA world champions means a lot to us," Klompus said. "We were the fifth-most watched college bowl game last year. We should be right up there again this year."
