Slater takes early lead

Kelly Slater was in first place after yesterday's opening-round action in the $100,000 Back Door "Shootout" surfing meet being held at Back Door Pipeline.

Yesterday's waves averaged eight to 10 feet in windy conditions. The competition was put on hold early in the afternoon by a frontal weather pattern that moved in quickly.

The remainder of the top 10 surfers are, in order: Luke Egan, James Labrador, Bruce Irons, Pancho Sullivan, Johnny Boy Gomes, Mark Occhiupo and Shane Beschan (tied), Shane Dorian, Jun Ho and Eric Diaz.

Conditions permitting, rounds two and three will be held today.



UHHOSTS IRISH, UTES

The University of Hawaii men will compete against Utah and the Wahine will take on Notre Dame Monday at 6 p.m. in the conclusion of the 19th annual Swimming Forum at UH's Duke Kahanamoku Pool.

The Rainbows are 3-1 in dual-meet competition and the Wahine are 2-3.

The Rainbow Invitational is scheduled for Jan. 2-3 with Hawaii going against nationally ranked teams from California, Texas A&M and Wisconsin.



WRESTLING AT McKINLEY

The McKinley Tiger Wrestling Tournament started this morning with 21 schools competing , including three from Fukuoka, Japan, and the Korean national champions from Seoul.

The 17 local schools include the host Tigers, the defending Oahu Interscholastic Association champions, the defending Maui Interscholastic League champions from Baldwin, and Waiakea, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champions.

The meet continues tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the McKinley High School gym.
