St. John’s plays Provo
for Iolani Classic title

The championship game of the 1996 Iolani Prep Basketball Classic will be held tonight at 8 at the Raiders gym.

The showdown features St. John's at Prospect Hall (Frederick, Md.), ranked No. 6 nationally, against Provo (Utah) High School, led by 6-foot-9 forward Mekeli Wesley. In the third-place game at 6:30, No. 14 St. Joseph Notre Dame (Alameda, Calif.) will take on Fairfax (Los Angeles).

Host Iolani will meet Chubu Technical of Okinawa for fifth place at 5.



BELELE, LATHAM TRIUMPH

Esfaye Belele and Jennifer Latham finished first in the men's and women's divisions, respectively, yesterday in the Holiday Diamond Head 8-kilometer road race at Kapiolani park.

Belele was timed in 24 minutes, 57 seconds.

Jonathon Lyau was runner-up with a time of 26:08 and Steve Smith came in third in 27:16.

Jennifer Latham finished in 29:09, a good two minutes ahead of second-place finisher Christine Patrick (31:16). Ann Baginski was third in 34:57.



HAWAII PACIFIC VS. BAKERSFIELD

At Blaisdell Arena, former UNLV player Kebu Stewart scored eight of his 10 points after halftime, including a jumper with 19 seconds left to tie it at 78-all for the Sea Warriors (7-1).

Llewellyn Smalley then hit two free throws with 3.1 seconds left to win it for HPU, the No. 8 team in the latest NAIA poll.

The Roadrunners, No. 10 in NCAA Division II poll, then had their inbound pass stolen by Jimmy Harris, sealing the victory.

Smalley led HPU with 21 points and Juergen Malbeck had 20.

Curtis McCants paced Cal State Bakersfield with 22 points.
