The county agreed not to pay him for Christmas work.
Last's personal attitude toward Christmas is bah-humbug, but he's not your typical Scrooge.
Every year since 1993, he has asked to work on Christmas Day.
"By me working, it allows others to spend the day with their families," he said.
The county always agreed, but said he'd have to take overtime pay or compensatory time off.
"We felt we were bound by the (United Public Workers) contract," said county deputy Personnel Director Rodney Kaide. "This year we accommodated him."

The Big Island's Mauna Kea had four separate experiences with glacial ice over the past 300,000 years. The oldest formed after eruption of a lava flow about 280,000 years ago, and the youngest glacier, the one formed 40,000 years ago, finally disappeared a little more than 13,000 years ago.
A new map depicts Big Island volcanoes, glacial deposits and deep faults related to huge undersea landslides. It's the latest U.S. Geological Survey handiwork.
The map is a compilation of geologic mapping from 1975 to 1995. Some 20 geologists worked on it.
"Most people don't think about glaciers when in Hawaii, but this map shows deposits of glaciers that formed high on Mauna Kea during the ice age," said mapmaker Edward W. Wolfe.
State law now prohibits minors from purchasing cigarettes but nothing prevents them from smoking.
The bill prohibits anyone under 18 from taking a drag along public streets or sidewalks, in city parks or other municipal property.
They would also be banned from smoking nearly anywhere else the city has jurisdiction including commercial buildings, common areas of multifamily dwellings and hotels, and even "smoking designated" areas of hospitals and clinics.

Sharleen P. Jardine of Waihee was driving west when the car went onto the right shoulder, then swerved left across the center line about 366 feet before Kahekili Highway at 11:15 p.m.
Four passengers in the other vehicle were treated at Maui Memorial Hospital today.
Traffic investigator Leighton Kanaele said Jardine may have been speeding but the cause of the accident is under investigation.
Jardine, who was not wearing a seat belt, was the 31st traffic fatality in Maui County this year, compared with 16 for all of last year.
