John Travolta, Charlie Park

Step up to the Michaels

THERE was a time when I used to say that the greatest work stoppage in San Francisco occurred when someone walked in the door at Perry's Restaurant and yelled out, "Hey, Mike!" At that time, nearly all the bartenders, three or four waiters and as many busboys were all named Mike, and they'd all turn to see what was going on. Now it's the more formal "Michael." First, KSSK is sponsoring tomorrow night's premiere of John Travolta's new film "Michael" (what else?), and people who call in to Michael W. Perry to win tickets to the premiere also qualify for two tickets to the Michael Jackson concert. Oh yes, who's hosting the movie premiere at Kahala Theaters tomorrow? KSSK on-air personality Michael T. You expected maybe Larry Price? ...

WHAT'S in a name, you ask? If I told you that you could see Harry Wayne Casey perform New Year's Eve in Kohala, you'd most likely say, "Who?" But if you knew it was K.C. and the Sunshine Band, you might take more notice. Same is true with Vincent Fournier (a k a Alice Cooper) or Prince Rogers Nelson, (now calling himself T.A.F.K.A.P.). In any event, Casey (or K.C., if you prefer) will be seeing in the new year at the Hilton Waikoloa Village ... Also back on the Big Island is Charlie Park, former G.M. of the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel. After opening the Ihilani Resort & Spa at Ko Olina, Park is now manager of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel...

CONGRATS to the Hawaii Pacific University cheerleaders, who won first place in the Universal Cheerleaders Association's national competition preliminaries. They've qualified to be in the nationals in Florida next month. One of the competitors is named Dave Donnelly, much to my surprise. However, despite the fact that among the skills for which they're judged are "tumbling" and "partner stunts," I am not the cheerleader ...

Doggie delights

IN the spirit of holiday giving, Greg Paulson of Canine Cuisine baked up three large buckets of gourmet biscuits for the dogs at the Hawaiian Humane Society. And while the doggies may not have appreciated the wreath, candy cane and other holiday shapes as much as the staffers, the flavor was much to their liking ...

AS Jim Winpenny perused the current issue of TV Guide, he wasn't surprised to find that five photos of "The Greatest TV Stars of All Time" (Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, Patty Duke, Jackie Gleason and Ed Sullivan) were taken by master lensman Philippe Halsman. What did surprise him was that three others (David Janssen, Dick Van Dyke and Lawrence Welk) were shot by local adman Marty Schiller's ubiquitous brother, Lawrence Schiller, who's riding near the front of the O.J. Simpson exploitation parade. He's co-authored the latest best-seller about Simpson and appeared on nearly every talk show in America to plug it ...

LOCAL actor George O'Hanlon Jr., who appears in "Inspecting Carol" at Manoa Valley Theatre, is the son of George Jetson. Well, sort of. His dad, George O'Hanlon Sr., was the voice of Jetson on "The Jetsons" for 25 years, has a star on Hollywood Boulevard and two Oscar nominations for short comedy subjects. O'Hanlon Sr. died at the Hanna-Barbera studio after his last day at work on the Jetson movie...

Walkin’ and runnin’

THIS is the greatest town for holding walks and runs. For example, more than 2,000 volunteers participated in "Walk for the Cure," a benefit for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, and the rain gave way just long enough for the walk to take place and raise some $140,000 to help fund diabetes research ... Meanwhile, the 1997 Great Aloha Run early entry deadline drawing was held and the winner is Merle Fujimoto of Pearl City. She won a trip for two to Las Vegas. Run promoter Carole Kai is just back from Vegas where she filmed "Hawaii Stars" and tested some of the lucky charms people have been sending her in observance of the 13th year of the Great Aloha Run. No word on whether they worked...
