
Ann Boyce Harris' wish was to survive through last month's general election to see her son Jeremy re-elected as mayor.The 79-year-old retired psychiatric social worker died Tuesday night at her son's Kalihi Valley home after a long illness. The mayor and his wife, Ramona, were at her bedside when she died.
Ann Harris and her husband, Joseph moved from Delaware to Kauai in 1974 to be close to their only son. Both enjoyed working on his campaigns, which included passing out fish to residents as part of a campaign strategy. They moved to Oahu in 1992 to live with their son when their health began to fail. Joseph Harris died in 1993 at the Kalihi home his son built.
Ann Harris spent most of her professional life counseling children in the Delaware school system. She also spent countless hours caring for youth, both on the mainland and during her retirement on Kauai.
Services on Kauai will be at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Christ Memorial Episcopal Church in Kilauea. Oahu services will be Wednesday at Nuuanu Memorial Park Mortuary. Mew Soong Chock Li, 86, of Honolulu, a federal retiree who was part of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s Kitchen Cabinet, died Friday in Queens Hospital.Born in Hawaii, she was graduated from the University of Hawaii and earned a masters degree at Columbia University. She taught at Hilo Junior High School from 1930 to 1946. Later she worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce and Office of Economic Opportunity where her work focused on civil rights and economic development programs for minorities and the underprivileged. Following her retirement from the federal government, Li worked toward a multi-faceted energy conservation project to benefit Hawaii economically and provide assistance to developing countries.
A devoted member of St. Marys Episcopal Church, she is survived by brothers Richard Dick On and Tai On Chock; and sister Mew Choy Chock Wong.
