Best bets for weekend fun

Tree displays
at annual festival

The 42nd annual Queen's Festival of Trees opens today with the display of 15 trees decorated by celebrities and business personalities.

Miss Hawaii, Melissa Short, is among the celebrities whose trees will be sold by silent auction to raise money to buy medical equipment at The Queen's Medical Center.

The festival also features holiday wreaths, ornaments, teddy bears and other crafts.

The festival opens today from 6 to 8 p.m. with Patron Night where admission is $35. It continues through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Admission is $1 for adults, free for children 12 and under.

The display is located at the Amfac Center Exhibition Hall. Information: 547-4780.



Historical Society book sale

The Hawaiian Historical Society's annual Holiday Open House and Book Sale runs from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today the the Society's Library, 560 Kawaiahao St.

The sale features a 25 percent discount on more than 100 new and popular titles from Hawaii's publishers. There will be history books, cookbooks, reference material and children's books available.

The Mission Houses Museum is offering sale goers a 10 percent discount on items from its shop, too.

Among the titles available are "Na Mamo: Hawaiian People Today," "A Legendary Tradition of Kamapuaa, the Hawaiian Pig-God," and "Growing Native Hawaiian Plants."
