THE Kahala Mandarin was the scene of the dinner reception for what hostess Emme Tomimbang dubbed the "Greekipino" wedding for Jimmy Zaharis and Sharlene Bernardino. Emme taught the Greek side of the family "mabuhay" toasts in Tagalog and joined the other Filipinos in learning the proper Greek toasts in return. The groom is the son of Kay Hampton and Mimis "Jimmy" Zaharis, former headliner at the old Mad Greek Restaurant. He got the old Mad Greek band back together for the first time in 18 years and Kay led the "Hasapiko," the famous Zorba the Greek line dance. The Bernardino clan joined in without missing a "hoopah." After the "Filipino money dance," where the dancing wedding couple is inundated with bills, the Filipinos formed a line dance of their own doing - what else? - the Macarena! ... Zorba, Macarena at
fusion weddingI'VE heard of second strings, but this is ridiculous. While Hawaii gets Planet Hollywood shareholder Tom Arnold to show up at the chain's Maui eatery, the Big Guns - Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and the bigger Arnold: Schwar-zenegger - are rolling out this morning for the groundbreaking of the Planet Hollywood Casino in Las Vegas. Building a casino is always something of a crap shoot - just ask former Hawaii hotelman Chris Hemmeter, who tossed snake eyes in New Orleans - but this one is aimed directly at its major competitor worldwide, the Hard Rock, which also has a Vegas casino ...
AND speaking of the Hard Rock, it was one of the early entries in the 42nd annual "Festival of Trees." The local HRC donated a tree they call the "Hard Rocker's Pin Collection Dream." Decorated with fiber-optic lights and specialty pins from Hard Rock Cafes all over the world, the 18-inch tree will be among those auctioned off at the fund-raiser for Queen's Medical Center Auxiliary. Queen's spokeswoman Karen Winpenny reports trees donated by local firms and luminaries, such as Miss Hawaii, Melissa Short, artist Anthony Casay and a "Danja Dog" tree made by the mad visionaries in the Star-Bulletin graphics department ...
AT the time Honolulu magazine wrote a piece last month about the mysterious departure of John Hollon as executive editor of the Advertiser, they surely had no idea he'd end up as a direct competitor. Hollon has surfaced in Irvine, Calif., as group editor of Fancy Publications, which puts him in charge of Hawaii magazine as well as three other publications. Jim Borg will continue on as editor of Hawaii, and will report to Hollon ... Hollon daze
SPEAKING of Jim Borg, I asked if he's received a lot of grief over the fact that the evil villains in the latest "Star Trek" movie, or so I'm told, are called the Borg. "Only from everybody I talk to," deadpanned Borg, who has yet to see his fellow Borg in action. He considered wearing a Borg outfit at Halloween, but wouldn't that be redundant? ...
FORMER Golden State Warrior coach Don Nelson has been quietly living full-time in a Maui beach house following his firing as coach of the New York Knicks. He had ringside seats at the recent Chaminade Classic on Maui ... Once again Ted Sturdivant has succeeded in "killing off" a living person. A couple of years ago he included Van Beazlie in his "Gone but Not Forgotten" list on invites for the ad and p.r. people's old-timer's reunion. Van showed up bemused. This year he lists John Farrington, and I'm told by Sam Sanford that he spoke with Farrington at his California home last week, but didn't have the heart to tell him he was dead ...
CAMPBELL Estate administration director Gordon Bruce is determined to break a hundred this year, and we're not talking golf. For the past three years, Bruce, the Kapolei Shopping Center's surrogate Santa, has donned his suit and led a Harley-Davidson hog-cade from the Pacific Center to the shopping center. Last year there were 90 bikers. He's hoping for more than 100 to trek to the center's "Santa Saturday" on Dec. 14 ... Breaking a hundred
