Eva LaRue, John Leonard
THE magic of Lanai strikes again. CBS soap stars Eva LaRue and John Callahan of "All My Children" were married in a very private ceremony Saturday at the Lodge at Koele. Things got underway more than an hour late and the site was moved when the bride and groom got wind that unauthorized photogs were going to try to capture the exchange of vows. Lodge staffers searched for the paparazzi for half an hour, but finally the 20-minute nuptials took place before about a dozen family and friends. The groom wore a black tuxedo with a white collarless shirt, and a white carnation lei and matching flower in his lapel. Eva wore a form-fitting white dress that fell to just above the knees, low cut in back and low enough in the bodice for a hint of cleavage. A lacy veil fell just below her neck. She wore matching white shoes and no stockings, showing well-tanned legs ... Super sudsters marry on Lanai
YOU'LL doubtless hear more about the romantic nuptials when the two co-host Lifetime TV's "Weddings of a Lifetime" on Dec. 15. For instance, during a post ceremony picture taking session, the bride and groom hugged and kissed. At one point John knelt on one knee as if re-enacting his proposal in France Oct. 1, when he gave Eva an engagement ring to be reckoned with: A 21/2-carat square cut diamond surrounded by four diamonds and two marquise-cut diamonds, a total of five carats. Eva's engagement present to John? Expensive cigars and cognac ...
THE annual "Old Timer's Reunion," an annual gathering of folks in the advertising, public relations and related fields, takes place Thursday from 4:30 p.m. on at Murphy's Bar & Grill. Organizer Ted Sturdivant notes with pride that three rules apply at each of these reunions: No name tags, no prizes and no speeches. I'm still wondering if there's anything symbolic in the fact the alphabetized guest list has me sandwiched between my banker (Walter Dods) and my ex-wife? (Just a joke!) ...
BACK when Lito Capina was a professional dancer in Las Vegas, he'd regularly send out Christmas cards picturing him with Vegas stars or showgirls. He'll be doing the same thing this year. An admirer of Kona Carmack since the local lass was a "Playmate of the Month" in Playboy, Lito had hoped to get her autograph at a signing session at Ala Moana, but his busy schedule prohibited it. Then Kona and boyfriend Jason Scott Lee dropped by Kumu Kahua to see "peregriNasyon" and after the show he got the two to pose for a photo with him. It's already found its way to "Warm Wishes from Hawaii" cards engraved "Lito, Kona and Jason S. Lee." ... Christmas stars
ALA Moana Center's food drive for Hawaii Foodbank brought in cash and 2,908 pounds of food, which someone with a lot of spare time figured out was more than the combined weight of the 13 graduating seniors on the UH football team, a total of 2,842 pounds ... Gerri Cadiz, editor of "Ilio & Popoki," a slick magazine dedicated to dogs and cats in Hawaii, writes, "I enjoy your column - especially your dedication to the correct use of the English language - definitely a dying art!" (Get ready for that second shoe to drop!) She then points out a pet peeve of her own - the misspelling of "Dalmatian," which I apparently did 101 times. Incidentally, put down that pen - I have no trouble with people who knowingly split infinitives as long as the meaning is clear ...
ONE man who won't be at the Old Timer's Reunion Thursday night (see above) is John Leonard, though he was on the guest list. Leonard died of a heart attack late Sunday night. The former publisher of Sunbums in the '70s and founder of Records Hawaii, Leonard was a promoter who owned JFL Enterprises and who brought many big name performers to Hawaii. He was also active in the old Crater Festivals in Diamond Head. In later years, Leonard moved to the Big Isle where he co-owned three radio stations with Charlie Higa. Leonard's name will be added to the "Gone But Not Forgotten" list at the Old Timer's party ... Sunbums has set
