The State Foundation of Culture and the Arts has application forms available for the 1997 Folk Arts Apprenticeship program, open to anyone practicing an ethnic or traditional cultural art form. Apprenticeships
promote folk artsThe program provides up to $4,000 to cover the expenses of learning from a master artist or crafter.

The Honolulu Japanese Junior Chamber of Commerce is selling 6-to-7-foot Douglas fir Christmas trees and wreaths to benefit The Arc in Hawaii, a nonprofit group that assists adults with mental retardation. First Noel

Add a touch of Hawaiiana to your Christmas decor this year. The Honolulu Academy of Arts is hosting a workshop for senior citizens and one for keiki and their parents. Hawaiian Christmas at home
Seniors can learn how to make Hawaiian-style Christmas ornaments from lauhala, raffia and other natural materials in a workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 3.
A workshop registration fee of $5 will be credited toward ornament materials, with a charge of $5 to $6 for each ornament materials kit.
The workshop will be held in the Education Gallery off Fountain Court. Park at Linekona Art Center for $1 with validation. Register in advance at 532-8726.
Keiki 6 and older can also learn to make Hawaiian Christmas ornaments from lauhala during a Keiki-Parent Activity Tour 10 a.m. Dec. 7.
In addition to the craft activity, Parasol Puppets will put on an original puppet show for all ages entitled, "Christmas Around the World!" There will be refreshments and a take-home surprise as well.
The Keiki-Parent Activity Tour is free. Meet promptly at 10 a.m. at the academy's Beretania Street entrance. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
