OPENED YESTERDAY

101 Dalmatians

Where the 1961 animated "101 Dalmatians" boasted style and substance, the live-action remake has neither. Instead it has Glenn Close in an over-the-top impersonation of Cruella DeVil, and screenwriter/producer John Hughes' harebrained violence. (G) At Aikahi, Enchanted Lake, Kahala, Kapolei, Laie, Mililani, Pearlridge, Restaurant Row.

OPENING TOMORROW

Looking for Richard

Al Pacino's meditation on William Shakespeare's "Richard III" is a really clever cinematic crib sheet that will be referred to by America's English students. (PG-13) At Marina.

SNEAK PREVIEW

Mars Attacks (Star rating unavailable)

Tim Burton's offbeat science fiction comedy tells about some aliens who land in Arizona and find an assortment of odd Earthlings. With Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito and Tom Jones. (PG-13) Saturday evening at Kahala.

CONTINUING

The English Patient

This story of wartime passion packs the adventurous and emotional wallop of "Casablanca" and the coolheaded intellectualism of a scholarly treatise on the futility of war. Stars Ralph Fiennes, Willem Dafoe, Kristin Scott Thomas and Juliette Binoche. (R) At Varsity.

First Wives Club

Diane Keaton, Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn are in top form as a trio of middle-aged women who seek revenge on the executive husbands who have dumped them for sweet young things. (PG) At Kam Drive-In.

Jingle All the Way

What was intended to spread Christmas cheer is a downer that slam-sbang special effects can't rescue. A busy executive (Arnold Schwarzenegger) spends Christmas Eve searching for the only toy his young son wants. (PG) At Kahala, Kapolei, Keolu, Mililani, Nanakuli, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row.

The Long Kiss Goodnight

This gawky, relentlessly earnest patchwork of film noir, action-adventure, psychological horror, comedy and touchy-feely sentimentality works, thanks to a luminous lead from Geena Davis and a show-stopping portrayal from Samuel L. Jackson. (R) At Kailua.

The Mirror Has Two Faces

Barbra Streisand's ugly duckling-turned-swan romantic comedy is an obsessive expression of the importance of appearances. (PG-13) At Kahala, Kailua, Kapolei, Mililani, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row.

Ransom

The son of a tycoon (Mel Gibson) is abducted and held for ransom in this smart Ron Howard movie. (R) At Kahala, Kam Drive-In, Kapolei, Keolu, Koko Marina, Mililani, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row, Waikiki.

Set It Off

Jada Pinkett, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise play housing project women who, with everything stacked against them, explode. The movie excels at depicting rage over an all-too-common reality. (R) At Kailua, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row.

Space Jam

Basketball mega star Michael Jordan and cartoon mega star Bugs Bunny team up for this clever, cute, rambunctious mix of animation and live action. (PG) At Aikahi, Kahala, Kam Drive-In, Kapolei, Keolu, Mililani, Nanakuli, Pearlridge, Restaurant Row, Waikiki.

Star Trek: First Contact

Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) leads the USS Enterprise in an attack on a gigantic Borg spacecraft. Several of the Borg escape and head to Earth, where they hope to control the present by sabotaging the past. (PG-13) At Enchanted Lake, Kam Drive-In, Kapolei, Koko Marina, Laie, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row, Waikiki.

Vertigo

Re-release of Alfred Hitchcock's haunting 1958 suspense thriller stars James Stewart and Kim Novak. The movie is being shown in new 70mm print enhanced with a DTS soundtrack. (PG) At Marina.

William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet

Director Baz Luhrmann puts Shakespeare's tragedy in a contemporary setting. Stars Leonard DiCaprio and Claire Danes. (PG-13) At Cinerama, Pearlridge West.
