Keeping tabs on Hawaii's crude oil

Sanford Ono has returned to Hawaii to take the newly created job of manager-international supply and marketing at BHP Hawaii.

He will coordinate the crude oil supply from BHP Petroleum in Melbourne, Australia and its regional offices in Houston and Singapore. He started Oct. 1.

"Basically, we are consolidating all the regional trading and marketing groups all under the Melbourne company," Ono said.

His job is to keep tabs on prices and what types of crude oil and refined petroleum products needed for the Hawaii refinery at Campbell Industrial Park.

Ono is a graduate of Baldwin High School on Maui. He has a bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii and a master's in business from Pepperdine University.

He joined BHP Hawaii in 1976 as a safety officer and for the past five years has been a crude oil trader with BHP Petroleum in Melbourne.

BHP Hawaii also operates the BHP Gas Express self-service gas station chain and is selling its BHP Gas Co. unit.
