A 25-year-old man accused of killing a Waikiki prostitute told police he intended to rob Deborah Christine Clark and that she was stabbed during an ensuing struggle for his knife.

District Judge Tenney Z. Tongg yesterday set bail for Jimmy Langita Camingao at $100,000 and sent the case to Circuit Court for trial.

Clark, 18, died from multiple stab wounds to the neck which perforated blood vessels as well as her left jugular vein, said deputy medical examiner Kanthi Von Goenthner who performed the autopsy.

Von Goenthner added that the woman was stabbed 38 times. Eighteen of 27 wounds to the neck, head and abdomen were in back of the victim's neck and head, and there was also a slash wound to the front of the neck, she said.

The 11 remaining wounds on the hands and forearm were described as "defense wounds" by Von Goenthner.

Police homicide Detective Michael Tsuda testified yesterday that Camingao admitted accompanying Clark to her Nahua Street apartment on Nov. 10, "not to have sex but to rob her."

The woman locked the door and demanded $100, but Camingao told her he only had $27. At that point, Camingao stated that he had a change of heart about the robbery and attempted to leave, but Clark blocked his way.

Camingao, who is 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighs about 130 pounds, said he took out a knife but dropped it when Clark bit his hand. Camingao said he jumped on Clark's back and "rode her like a horse" to try to regain possession of the knife, Tsuda said.

During the struggle, Camingao admitted stabbing Clark repeatedly, the detective added. Camingao told police Clark was still alive because she allegedly told him "you're not going to get away with what you did."

Camingao removed his shorts and attempted to the wash blood off but eventually discarded them in the apartment.

Before leaving through a back exit, Camingao told police he emptied Clark's purse and took keys to a 15th-floor Waikiki hotel room she was also using.

Camingao and a friend identified as "Irwin" went to the hotel room where the suspect allegedly found a fanny pack containing cash and yen which he admitted stealing.

Camingao allegedly also told friends later that day "he had killed a prostitute," Tsuda said. Investigators were able to track Camingao from a name and pager number written on a piece of paper found with the shorts at the murder scene, Tsuda said.

The pager number belonged to Camingao's ex-girlfriend, who told police she had given it to him.

He was arrested Nov. 19, nine days after Clark was killed.

In his statement to police, Camingao said he and three others, including Irwin, rented a hotel room to smoke "batu," or crystal methamphetamine. Later he and Irwin discussed robbing a prostitute, Camingao stated to Tsuda.

They saw Clark and followed her to her hotel room. She agreed to a date with both men and accompanied them back to their room but when she saw two others there, Clark suggested they go to her Nahua Street apartment.
