Fruits make colorful, zesty smoothies.

Kiwis lighten up
holiday feasts

Serve light, bright kiwifruit as an antidote to Thanksgiving gorging.

Combine kiwi and other best-buy fruits in smoothies. Kiwis are four for $1 at Daiei while Red Delicious apples are 3 pounds for $1.99 at Star Markets. Navel oranges cost 59 cents a pound at IGH Stores, and papaya is 78 cents a pound at Daiei.

Choose kiwis that are soft to the touch for the sweetest flavor. Two kiwifruit provide nearly twice the vitamin C of an orange, as much potassium as a medium-size banana and twice the vitamin E of an avocado.

Holiday uses include adding diced kiwi to cranberry relish. Replace tomatoes in leftover-turkey sandwiches. Or, make a festive frozen pie: Soften vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt. Fold in diced kiwifruit and other ingredients, such as nuts or dried fruits. Pour into a graham cracker crust and freeze.

Make that kiwi smoothie as a morning eye opener or afternoon cooler. Add leftover cranberries.
