Debbie Midori Ushijima, formerly of Honlulu, married Ronald Jude Cerrito on November 2, 1996, in Palm Springs, California.

The bride attended St. Andrew's Priory and the University of Hawaii. She is employed by 1010 WINS of New York as an account executive. Her parents are Wanda Ushijima of Honolulu and Ronald Ushijima of Kona.

The groom attended Notre Dame High School in East Haven, Connecticut, and Southern Connecticut State college. He currently works for EPIC Records as vice president of marketing and artist development. His parents are Anita and Don Potsiadlo of East Haven, and Shirley and Ronald Cerrito, Sr., of Branford, Connecticut.

Scholarships and academic honors

These island residents or groups recently earned scholarships or academic recognition:

Jennifer I.S. Choi of Sacred Hearts Academy is the grand prize winner of the annual essay contest sponsored by YMI, a fraternal organization for Catholic men based in San Francisco. She won $1,000 for writing on the theme, “Should There Be Any Control Over What Can Go Onto the Internet?” Claire Griffin of Sacred Hearts also received $100 for being the teacher who does the best job of promoting the contest among students.

The William James and Dorothy Bading Lanquist Foundation has awarded to 10 students scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,500, totaling $17,000. They are Michael Bonnet of Lahainaluna High School; Florendo Cabudol of Waipahu; Jocelyne Comstock of Konawaena; Cheyenne Fry of Pearl City; Dixie Gabonelas of Farrington; Tammy Lai of Mililani; Kai Ki Mow of Moanalua; Jennifer Okada of Aiea; Un Mei Pan of Honolulu; and Gregory Smith of Hilo.

Harmony Moon Towne of the University of Hawaii at Manoa has received the $5,000 Morris K. Udall scholarship to promote careers in environmental protection. She was the only winner from Hawaii of 55 students nationwide.

The Fund for the Pacific Century has awarded 16 graduating high school students $500 scholarships. They are Courtney J. Nekota and Brian Y. Matsumoto of Mililani High School; Dara S. Ono and Scott J. Pierce of Moanalua; Summer U. Aona and Fred V. Andam of Campbell; Amber H.M. Kuhlman and Christian M. Williams of Kalaheo; Jennifer T.S. Lee and Leon R. Geschwind of Roosevelt; Antje K. Frychel and Ryan H. Agena of Maui; Alicia V. Vegas and Casey S. Agena of Waimea; and Cara M. Kanemoto and Tyson K. Mahuna of Honokaa.

Richard Duran, Brian Wong and Karelyn Ong of Oahu and Byron Yap of Maui have been awarded scholarships from the Hawaii CCIM Chapter of the Certified Commercial Investment Members. Ong, selected the most outstanding real estate student at the University of Hawaii also received a cash award of $1,000.

Andrew Hongo, a 1996 Punahou graduate enrolled at Yale University, has won the $5,000 Henry and Chiyo Kuwahara memorial scholarship from the Japanese American Citizens League. He also received the Sterling Scholar Award in Speech and Drama, the Punahou Alumni Award for a male graduate with the highest grade point average, and scholarships from the Juliette Atherton Foundation, the Robert Byrd Foundation, the Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation, the Hawaii Education Association and Oahu One Credit Union. He is also a two-time winner of the Na Hoku Hanohano Award for “best religious album of the year.”

Harmony Marya Corsi-Clark, a Kamehameha Schools graduate, was awarded the $1,800 Minority Achievement Program Scholarship for the 1996-97 academic year at Western Washington University.

St. Francis Medical Center has awarded $500 scholarships to high school students Michael Arakaki of Redemption Academy; Claribel Chan of Punahou; and Heather Kim and Wanda Tabalanza of Sacred Hearts Academy.

$800 scholarships were awarded to college students Cesar Fajardo of the University of Southern California; Julius Tigno and Merwin Galiciano of the University of Hawaii; and Linda Lee of Kapiolani Community College.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa, College of Education has awarded $62,500 in scholarships to 38 students pursuing degrees in education. They are Kristy Yoshida, April Halfmann, Robert Lopes Jr., Renee Omori, Tara Pruett, Tanya Kaneshiro, Kris Yasuda, Margarita Alo-Chu, Lisa Ann Bogac, Christine Kakalia, Susan Nakamiyo, Evelyn Sarmiento, Jason Verity, Amanda Briscoe, Debra Gochros, Lehualani Beltrame, George Hanawahine, Erin Hashimoto, Augustus Acosta, Marcy Nichols, Wayne Fanning, Lora Lee, Misty Miyamoto, Natalie Asato, Audrey Burnett, Jennifer LBurley, Gilbert Chan, Liana Horovitz, Leslie Kato, Johnson Koo, Tracy Lum, Cheryl Nagano, Wynn Oshiro, Lisa Takahashi, Margaret Crowell, Samantha Sielken, Timothy Joseph In, and Sibyl Oishi.
