Stingrays brings Sharks’
win streak to an end

Maui blasted Honolulu pitching for 17 hits, including 13 for extra bases, en route to a 9-2 victory over the Sharks in a Hawaii Winter Baseball league game at Rainbow Stadium before a crowd of 2,152 yesterday.

The Stingrays also halted Honolulu's winning streak at six.

With the score tied 1-1, Maui's Josh Booty greeted Honolulu reliever Toyokazu Ohba with a leadoff home run to right to start the fifth inning. Mitsuru Honma followed with a triple to left-center field and, one out later, scored on Ben Petrick's double down the left-field line.

The Stingrays iced the game with a five-run seventh that featured doubles by Anthony Sanders and Nate Rolison, a triple by Petrick and Danny Clyburn's two-run homer.

West Oahu 3-1, Hilo 0-2

At Hilo, the hometown Stars managed just four hits in each game but escaped with a doubleheader split against the visiting Cane Fires.

In the opener, Marty Gazarek hit a two-run homer in the first inning and scored in the sixth to lead West Oahu to a 3-0 victory.

Chad Hartvigson, Jason Berry and Justin Speier, who earned seventh save of the season, combined on the four-hitter.

Hilo took the second game, 2-1, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hirotoshi Kitagawa walked, took second on Gavin Jackson's sacrifice bunt and scored on Scott Hunter's single.

Virgil Chevalier's homer had given the Stars a 1-0, first-inning lead. The CaneFires had tied the score in the top of the fifth on Matt Bokemeier's RBI single.
