Jaquias edged Hawaii's Pancho Sullivan, 24.44 to 24.17 in the first event of the Red Dog Triple Crown of Surfing.

"My personal goal is to win the Triple Crown Championship," Jaquias said. "I've never won one so I want to have that under my belt before I finish my career."

Former Triple Crown champion and world champion Derek Ho, also from Hawaii, was third.
