Four-way deadlock
for sumo lead

FUKUOKA, Japan - Akebono and Musashimaru both lost today, falling to 10-3 and into a four-way tie for first place with Wakanohana and Kaio in the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.

Grand champion Akebono, or Chad Rowan from Hawaii, fell victim to Takatoriki's speed and feint as the lower-ranked wrestler sidestepped and pulled him down.

Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, and Wakanohana wrestled evenly, exchanging a series of throw attempts, slaps, pushing and shoving, until Wakanohana succeeded in twisting Musashimaru down.

Kaio outmaneuvered Tamakasuga, shoving his opponent off balance, getting in behind and tapping him out.

Konishiki, or Salevaa Atisanoe from Hawaii, was pushed out by Shikishima and dropped to 5-8.

In the juryo division, George Kalima (9-4) from Hawaii forced out Kotogaume and William Hopkins (5-8) from Hawaii was driven out by Gojoro.


Beachley wins OP Pro

Layne Beachley of Manly Beach, Australia, recorded her first victory in Hawaii yesterday when she won the women's division of the OP Pro Surfing Championship at Haleiwa's Alii Beach Park in clean 3- to 6-foot waves.

She earned $2,000 with a score of 28.83.

Patricia Rossi of Tahiti was second and Florida's Lisa Anderson came in third.

Trials in the men's division continued yesterday with Hawaii's Rainos Hayes and Jo Jun advancing.

In the junior division, Haleiwa's Dayton Segundo and Jason Bogle advanced to the semifinal round.



AMATEUR BOXING

United States Amateur Boxing-Hawaii will hold a 14-fight card tomorrow at Schofield Barracks' Martinez Physical Fitness Center.

The first bout starts at 5 p.m. and the public is welcome. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for military, $2 for ages 8-12 and free for children 7 and under.

Army champion Stanley McLain and Gabriel Aio of the Kakaako Club are matched in the heavyweight main event.

OLYMPIANS AT LIBERTY HOUSE

Two 1996 Olympians, Gary Hall Jr., a medalist in swimming, and Mike Whitmarsh, a medalist in beach volleyball, will make an appearance from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Liberty House Ala Moana men's swim wear department to meet fans and sign autographs.



RECERTIFICATION TEST SET

The United States Soccer Federation's recertification test for referees will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Niu Valley School Cafeteria.
