Associated Press

FUKUOKA, Japan - Akebono and Musashimaru both lost today, but the wrestlers from Hawaii still shared a one-victory lead over their nearest rivals with three days left in the 15-day Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.

Grand Champion Akebono (Chad Rowan) and Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani) had 10-2 records. At 9-3 were Wakanohana, Kaio and Tochinazuma.

Takanonami put his arm around Akebono's neck and threw him down. Oginishiki fought off the initial hand thrusts by Musashimaru, grabbed his belt and threw him down. Kinishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe) pushed out Aogiyama, improving to 5-7.

In the juryo division, George Kalima, 8-4, pushed out Zenshinyama. Hawaii's William Hopkins, 5-7, was sent out by Dejima.

John Feleunga and Eric Gasper lost their sandanme division bouts.

Naki improving
after surgery

University of Hawaii softball player Joelynn Naki underwent a second operation yesterday to stop blood from leaking into her brain.

Doctors at The Queen's Medical Center said Naki was coherent and conscious last night. She was described as being in some pain, but overall in good spirits.

Surgeons believe they removed all the damaged blood vessels in the six-hour operation, said Melody Toth, UH Wahine trainer.

Naki, a junior infielder who batted .284 last season for the Wahine, suffers from arterial-venous malformation, or a weakness in her arteries that caused blood to leak into her brain.

Naki was diagnosed after she collapsed at her apartment Nov. 3. She underwent her first neurosurgery three days later, at which time doctors removed a blood clot but could not figure out what caused it.

RICHEY LEADS SEA WARRIORS

Steve Richey had 28 points to lead Hawaii Pacific University to a season-opening, 90-85 victory over the University of South Dakota last night at Blaisdell Arena.

Richey scored five of the Sea Warriors' last seven points to stave off a late run by the visitors. He hit on a 15-foot jumper and made a three-point play after being fouled on a breakaway layup to put HPU in control with less than a minute left.

Hawaii Pacific center Juergen Malbeck scored 25 points.

UH SAILORS FINISH SECOND

The University of Hawaii coed sailing team finished second in last weekend's Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association North-South Intersectional regatta at Lake Cachuma, Calif.

UC Irvine won with 56 points. UH had 62.

Hawaii also moved up to fourth place from eighth in the latest rankings released Monday.
