The Grass Harp

The high-powered cast, including Walter Matthau, Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Jack Lemmon and Mary Steenburgen, is wasted on this drama. (PG) At Marina Twins

The Mirror Has Two Faces

Barbra Streisand's romantic comedy is an obsessive expression of the importance of appearances, good looks and being adored. (PG-13) At Kahala, Kailua, Kapolei, Mililani, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row.

Space Jam

Basketball mega-star Michael Jordan and cartoon mega-star Bugs Bunny star in a mix of live action and animation. See review on Page D-5. (PG) At Aikahi, Kahala, Kam Drive-In, Kapolei, Keolu, Mililani, Nanakuli, Pearlridge, Restaurant Row, Waikiki.

CONTINUING

The Associate

Whoopi Goldberg plays a financial analyst who gets the best of her chauvinistic firm in this business comedy. (PG-13) At Laie, Pearlridge West.

Big Night

A feast of a story that explores questions of family, artistry, religion, romance and more. (R) At Cinerama.

D3 The Mighty Ducks

The third in Disney's "Mighty Ducks" series is an enjoyable good-natured kids' movie, fast-paced and full of hokey hockey action. (PG) At Kam Drive-In, Kapolei.

Dear God

Greg Kinnear stars as a con artist who discovers his humanitarian side working in the Postal Service's dead letter office. The cookie-cutter script is really just a sitcom pumped up into a feature. (PG) At Kahala, Kailua, Pearlridge West.

First Wives Club

Diane Keaton, Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn are in top form as middle-age women who decide to seek revenge on their executive husbands who have dumped them for sweet young things. (PG) At Marina, Pearlridge.

Fly Away Home

This animal, kid and family picture of the first order stars Jeff Daniels as a self-involved father who helps his sullen teen daughter Anna Paquin with her adopted geese. (PG) At Enchanted Lake, Kapolei.

The Ghost and the Darkness

This literate and eerie true-life chiller stars Val Kilmer as 19th-century British engineer in in Africa wrestling with the possibility that the movie's title characters - two marauding lions, could be the physical embodiment of the spirit of evil. (R) At Kapolei, Koko Marina.

High School High

Though loaded with pratfalls, sight gags and an out-of-it hero (Jon Lovitz), "High School High" fails because instead of parodying earnest-teacher movies, it becomes one itself. (PG-13) At Kapolei, Keolu, Koko Marina, Laie, Nanakuli, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row.

Larger Than Life

Bill Murray stars in another road-trip movie, but this time his companion is an elephant. Kids and Murray fans will love it, non-Murray fans will just have to get over it. (PG) At Pearlridge West.

The Long Kiss Goodnight

This gawky, relentlessly earnest patchwork works, thanks to a luminous lead from Geena Davis and a show-stopping portrayal from Samuel L. Jackson. (R) At Enchanted Lake, Pearlridge West.

Michael Collins

Liam Neeson plays the title character and Julia Roberts is his \fiancee in this epic, Neil Jordan-directed biography of the '20s-era Irish revolutionary leader. (R) At Varsity.

Ransom

The young son of a fabulously wealthy tycoon (Mel Gibson) is abducted and held for $2 million ransom. Gibson drags viewers through every conceivable emotion and Rene Russo does a fine job showing a mother's anguish. (R) At Aikahi, Kahala, Kapolei, Keolu, Koko Marina, Mililani, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row, Waikiki.

Set It Off

Jada Pinkett, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise play four housing project women who, with everything stacked against them, explode. Despite some implausibilities, the movie excels at action, drama and depicting rage over an all-too-common reality. (R) At Enchanted Lake, Pearlridge, Restaurant Row, Waikiki.

Sleepers

Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman give solid performances as a fatherly priest and washed-up attorney, respectively. Barry Levinson's drama follows the group of friends who cover up a killing that was in revenge of a heinous crime. (R) At Kahala, Kapolei, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row.

Stephen King's Thinner

An adaptation of King's novel about an overweight man who keeps getting thinner and thinner after being cursed by a gypsy, the movie has potential but never taps the theme which equates moral excess with physical excess. (R) At Kapolei.

That Thing You Do!

Tom Hanks' directorial debut follows a fictional rock band in the 1960s, on its climb to the top. Hanks also plays the band's manager. (PG) At Kahala, Kapolei.

William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet

Director Baz Luhrmann puts Shakespeare's enduring tragedy in a hard-edged contemporary Verona Beach. Stars Leonard DiCaprio and a luminous Claire Danes, who manages to make the blank verse seem natural. (PG-13) At Enchanted Lake, Kahala, Kapolei, Laie, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row.
