Eric Galloway, an impact player at the junior college level, was expected to submit his scholarship acceptance paperwork today with the University of Hawaii men's basketball team.

Galloway, a 6-foot-8 forward who competed for powerhouse Atlanta Metro, verbally committed to the Rainbows yesterday. He made his final campus visit to Boston University over the weekend before choosing Hawaii over B.U., Memphis, Miami and Maryland.

Nicknamed 'The Helicopter' because of his 43-inch vertical jump, Galloway is the only recruit Hawaii coach Riley Wallace will sign during the early period. According to one scouting service, Galloway "is a very athletic, very gifted athlete with incredible hops. More than a scorer, he can energize an offense."

The Rainbows open their season tonight with an exhibition game against Jiangsu Club of China.

Hawaii's small college men's basketball season opens this week with high hopes for Brigham Young-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific.

Both teams are ranked in the NAIA preseason poll, BYU-Hawaii at No. 4 and HPU seventh. The Seasiders tip off the season tonight with NCAA Division II power South Dakota in a 7:30 p.m. game at Cannon Activities Center.

Ken Wagner's team features preseason All-American Ionatana Enosa, a 6-foot-10 center from American Samoa. The Seasiders return seven players from a 24-7 team that was eliminated in the second round of the NAIA national tournament.

Tony Sellitto's Sea Warriors open with South Dakota tomorrow in a 7:30 p.m. game at Blaisdell Arena. HPU finished 27-6, also ending its season in the second round of the NAIA tournament.

The Sea Warriors feature 7-foot-1 senior center Juergen Malbeck, a preseason All-American who is considered the best big man in the NAIA by several basketball publications. Hawaii Pacific also has Vanderbilt transfer J.J Lucas, a 6-10 junior forward and son of former NBA great Jerry Lucas.

Hawaii-Hilo begins its year Friday with a 7:15 p.m. game against Puget Sound at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. The Vulcans defeated Jiangsu Club of China last night, 114-94, in an exhibition game. Merriel Jenkins scored 32 points and snared 10 rebounds for the Vulcans.

Chaminade again hosts an impressive Maui Invitational beginning next Monday at the Lahaina Civic Center. First up for the Silverswords is Massachusetts.
