Two Hawaii sumotori
tied for lead

Associated Press

FUKUOKA, Japan - Hawaii-born wrestlers Akebono and Musashimaru shared the lead with 9-1 records today as Kaio fell one victory behind them with five days left in the 15-day Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.

Tied at 8-2 with Kaio were Wakanohana and Tochiazuma.

Yokozuna (grand champion) Akebono, or Chad Rowan, sent out Oginishiki with hand thrusts.

Ozeki (champion) Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani, grabbed Akinoshima's belt and pushed him out.

Konishiki, or Salevaa Atisanoe from Hawaii, forced out Terao for his fourth victory against six defeats.

In the juryo division, George Kalima 7-3) of Hawaii sent out Wakashoyo and William Hopkins (5-5) of Hawaii was pushed out by Kotogaume.

Ljungquist, Shinnick on honor roll

There is little doubt that Angelica Ljungquist will pick up her fourth All-American honor next month. The senior middle blocker for the University of Hawaii women's volleyball team leads the Western Athletic Conference in hitting, blocking and aces, and is second in kill average.

But Ljungquist proved she was the complete student-athlete yesterday when she was named to the Academic All-American District VIII first team. The political science major from Sweden is now eligible for the national Academic All-American honors that will be announced Dec. 10.

Academic honors were also given to UH football player Chris Shinnick, a junior free safety named to the CFA Scholastic All-America team yesterday.

"This means a lot to me," said Ljungquist, an aspiring lawyer with a 3.31 GPA."This is exciting because it speaks for what I've been doing off the court, on my own."

Karratti gets Football Fever

Twenty-four years ago, Ken Karratti won what he considers the prize of a lifetime: his wife, Betty. Yesterday, the 47-year-old Temple Valley resident celebrated his wedding anniversary by winning the $500 cash prize in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin's Football Fever contest.

Karratti went 9-1 on one of the four ballots he submitted in the weekly contest, missing perfection by one pick. The uncle of University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball redshirt Leah Karratti chose Colorado State over Wyoming in a game the Cowboys won, 25-24.

"I enter every week," said Karratti, a collections specialist at the Kapiolani branch of First Hawaiian Bank. "I root for the 49ers and Hawaii although I picked BYU this week. I'm a loyal fan but a realist, too."

Karratti's ballot was selected in a random drawing of all entries that tied or bettered the top celebrity panelist.

This week's lead celebrity prognosticator was the Star-Bulletin's Mike Fitzgerald at 7-3.

Fitzgerald is now tied for the overall lead with the Star-Bulletin's Cindy Luis at 80-40. Luis went 5-5 on the week, as did Brickwood Galuteria of KCCN. Turning in 6-4 records were KHNL's Robert Kekaula, KHON's Leslie Wilcox and KCCN's Charly Espina.

The men's team cut into the women's lead by a game but still trails by four, 227-133 to 223-137.

Karratti, a church league volleyball player and certified referee, said he'll use the winnings to take his wife on a dinner cruise for their anniversary.
