A 27-year-old Mililani man questioned in the Nov. 3 hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of Honolulu Advertiser photographer Carl Viti went free yesterday pending further investigation.

He was booked for investigation of failure to render aid and negligent homicide, but no immediate charges were filed. Police hope to seek a grand jury indictment.

The suspect turned himself in at the Wahiawa police station at 8 a.m. yesterday.

Evidence specialists were expected to go over the car police recovered from a ravine near the Helemano Military Reservation outside Wahiawa "with a fine-toothed comb," said traffic Sgt. David Talon today. Police are also waiting for witnesses who are off-island to return and positively identify the suspect.

The car was taken to the Honolulu police station and impounded there. It was extricated from a brushy area. Recent heavy rains made recovery difficult, police said.

Viti, 52, was struck from behind while bicycling on Kamehameha Highway across Wheeler Army Air Field Nov. 3 by a motorist who stopped momentarily. The motorist left after telling other motorists who also stopped that he was going for help. He never returned.
