Child’s play for all ages

We've all been there - begging our parents for a dog; torturing our sisters; whining and pleading to watch more television. Twenty such common kidhood experiences are presented in an hourlong musical play for kid audiences, "How to Eat Like a Child," this week at Kamehameha Schools.

The play was adapted from Delia Ephron's book of the same name. It is being staged by a cast of 20 9th- through 12th-grade Kamehameha students with support from Keaka Kamehameha drama club for secondary students. Choreography is by Ka'ohi Yojo, a Kamehameha graduate, who did the choreography when she was a sophomore at the school for a 1990 production of the musical. It was such a hit that the school is staging a revival.

Big Isle student writing winner

Honoka'a High junior Anthony Kahawai'i is the winner of Pacific Islanders in Communications' screenwriting contest.

Kahawai'i's script for "The Hawaiian Sting" is a playful pidgin romp encompassing elements of local culture such as flies and a surfing cockroach.

The 17-year-old writer says the idea developed while "playing around the kitchen table."

PIC's contest was created to give Pacific writers an opportunity to write for television.

"The Hawaiian Sting" is scheduled to be produced for television in December. Auditions for actors will be held Saturday and Sunday at Island Post, 875 Waimanu, Suite 600.

There are roles for one part-Hawaiian man, age 20 to 30, who can speak pidgin; one Hawaiian woman 60 to 70; and two part-Hawaiian girls, ages 16 to 19. For more information about the auditions, call Don Nahaku at 487-2828 or 287-4435.
