Fired up over coal power

Mark Woodruff has taken over at AES Barbers Point Inc., the company that brought the first large-scale coal-fired power plant to Hawaii in 1992.

It supplies electricity to Hawaiian Electric Co. and steam to Chevron's refinery at the Campbell Industrial Park.

"I'm interested in continuing to build on our performance as the finest plant in the world," Woodruff said.

He has 17 years experience in the energy business. He joined AES in June 1991, with responsibility for new business in the western United States.

He also is an officer and vice president of Singapore-based AES Transpower Private Ltd., the company's Pacific Rim division. AES Corp., founded in 1981, owns and runs plants worth more than $2 billion.

Woodruff earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the University of Delaware.
