Associated Press

FUKUOKA, Japan - Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, remained undefeated at 3-0 with a victory today in the 15-day Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.

Yokozuna (grand champion) Akebono, or Chad Rowan from Hawaii, was one victory behind the leaders at 2-1 after sending out winless Asahiyutaka with hand thrusts.

Ozeki (champion) Musashimaru thrust out Kotonishiki.

Two other ozeki, Wakanohana and Takanonami, suffered their second successive setbacks.

Konishiki, or Salevaa Atisanoe from Hawaii, was thrown out by Minatofuji and fell to 1-2.

SKATERS ADVANCE

Two skaters from Hawaii have qualified to compete in the United States Figure Skating Association's Pacific Coast Sectionals, to be held next month in Bountiful, Utah.

Terry Walters advances after winning the gold medal in the Adult Ladies division at last week's USFSA Central Pacific Regional Championships in Dublin, Calif.

Sabrina Suzuki will go to the next month's sectionals after placing second in the Intermediate Ladies Free Skate.

LJUNGQUIST HONORED

Angelica Ljungquist has been named the Western Athletic Conference volleyball player of the week for helping Hawaii to Pacific Division victories at Colorado State and Wyoming last week.

In the Colorado State match, she had a triple-double with 24 kills, 14 digs and 11 blocks.

BYUH NO. 1

The unbeaten Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's volleyball team continues as a unanimous choice as the No. 1 team in the weekly NAIA poll.

The Seasiders, 24-0, received all nine first-place votes. St. Mary's, Tex., 32-1, is second.

Hawaii Pacific College moved up one spot this week to 11th. The Sea Warriors are 16-7.

PUNAHOU GIRLS CHAMPS

The Punahou girls' volleyball team defeated Kamehameha, 15-7, 15-11, at Mid-Pacific Institute on Saturday to win its first Interscholastic League of Honolulu title in 15 years.

Outside hitter Tehani Miyashiro led the Buffanblu with eight kills. She also had two blocks, eight digs and two aces. Setter-hitter Lindsey Berg added seven kills, six digs, 12 assists, one ace and one block. Defensive specialist Rava Mow led in digs with nine.

FIRST NEIGHBOR ISLE FEVER WINNER

Dick Fujii has a quick answer when you ask him how he's going to spend his Football Fever earnings.

"Gonna pay for my hearing aid," said the "almost" 73-year-old Hilo resident.

"Sometimes I just guess what you're saying. Maybe I'm right. Ha, ha!"

Fujii is the first neighbor island Football Fever winner. He is a retired custodian for the University of Hawaii-Hilo who has been playing the contest for a year. He'll pocket $500.

"My wife said, 'About time,' " said Fujii, still laughing.

"But, hey, not too bad after one year, heh? I'm on a roll."

Fujii, who lives with his wife of 46 years, Kay (he describes her as "beautiful"), said he isn't a couch-potato football fan.

"I only watch on rainy days," he said. "I have a big yard and plenty plants, so I rather be outside. I always watch Monday Night Football."

But Fujii's 10-out-of-10 record shows he has enough football savvy to go without the tube.
